My 2000 Toyota 4runner V6 125k miles automatic transmission started slipping on cold starts especially in the morning. After starting up, putting in drive and pressing the gas pedal first gear doesn't immediately engage but slips with no real power reaching the wheels. Then after about 5-10 seconds of slippage in jumps into 1st gear and then seems to shift normally. On the latest cold started slipping, I then manually shifted to 1st, 2nd and then drive after which further automatic shifting was normal. I took it to the Toyota dealer today for a trans fluid flush and change, the fluid was brownish but the mechanic said he's seen worse. So far today no change still slips on cold start. The mechanic said it might help or the transmission might not last 5k miles. He said a remanufactured transmission might run $2500 or a new replacement $4000. Based on this what is your prognosis based on seeing this before. Is this the beginning of the end for this transmission, or could a flush & change fix the transmission problem.

Low transmission fluid is usually the only reason power engages late or slippage occurs. But changing the transmission fluid again would not hurt. The stuff really shouldn't deteriorate like engine oil. Be sure to not run the vehicle many miles until the problem is completely resolved < 100 miles. One easy check would be to make sure the transmission lines are well connected and maintain pressure as well as fluid level. The good thing is that Toyota has a reputation of very good transmissions.

1999 toyota 4runner, 140K miles: for 2 weeks, have problem starting when cold in morning. takes 3-4 clicks and foot on gas pedal to start. now also problem starting when warm after driving for 30mins....

Sounds like a sticky throttle if you can't keep idle. It won't hurt to try.... you can try a quick cheap trick by spraying a little carbon remover (buy at any auto store i.e. autozone, oreiley's) inside the throttle, open the valve, spray just small amount, close it back up and rev it a few times and repeat. It removes the carbon film after long use. fixed my idle issue in my cars. If its really bad you might have to clean it thoroughly but i highly doubt you have to do that.

My 2000 Grand Cherokee LAREDO, V6, automatic doesn't catch when you put it in R to reverse. It basically 'jump' into REVERSE gear either after a few seconds, or sometimes as much as 60...

There could be a few things wrong. The reverse slip could be a worn sevro. the slipping on shifhting gears could be seals in the solenoid package. Try some transmission additive, this will recondition the seals. this could take care of both problems. Tranx, Lucas make good additives. There are other things in the transmission that could cause this, but for $10.00 it's worth a shot. I used it my truck for slipping three years ago and still no problems.

When I first start my car the transmission works fine. after the car has ran for a short amount of time (around 5 miles) the reverse slips and the car won't move backwards. In the afternoon on my 30 mile...

Sounds like it's on it's way out.
You will soon need to repair or replace it.
Automatic transmissions start at @$2000 & up these days, mostly up.
If you're at all handy - they are not that difficult to replace with one from a recycling yard like Pick & Pull... if you can safely get under the car.
RWD R&R is a bit easier than FWD R&R. 4WD gets a little complicated - but still doable...if you're handy with tools around cars.

I have a 1990 Toyota 4Runner automatic that is slipping between gears. The rpms go way up but does not accelerate as it should. I do not know if this is related but the stick is very loose. This started...

Try changing the oil and filter, and /or the modulator valve. It is an automatic, right? I'm not sure what youmean by the "stick is very loose".

'00 Toyota 4Runner manual transmission slipping out of first gear

The problem is most likely internal. Sounds like it could be the synchronizer or maybe the gear itself. Hard to say until you take it apart and look at it. I guess a price range of around $1000-$1500 to rebuild, repair costs depend on what parts needed, cost of parts, labor/time involved.
