The engine fan is a 12 volt DC motor in a housing attached to the radiator.
Unplug the fan and run two wires from the battery to the fan plug connections, if it runs the fan is good and you need to look next to the temperature sensor which tells the fan to turn on due to engine heat. If fan does not turn on with direct electricial connection then you can buy a replacement at advance, autozone, or on ebay motors. Note apply power to the fan's connector, not to the car wiring harness. If your fan is good I believe the there are two termperature sensors screwed into the driver's side of the engine head. They look similar but have different electrical connectors.

I have a 2000 Saturn L series and it keeps getting hot, mainly idling and going up hills. The fan seems to be working fine, it doesn't leak anywhere.

Te first obvious question is the coolant level full with no air in radiator, loose serpentine belt, is the cooling fan running, especially at idle . What are signs of a bad water pump?
Five Signs Your Water Pump Is Failing
  • Overheating. A dead or dying water pump cannot circulate coolant through your vehicle's engine and, as such, the engine will overheat. ...
  • Coolant Leaks. Coolant leaks from the water pump are common and a clear sign that it's time to replace the pump. ...
  • Corroded Water Pump. ...
  • Whining Noises.
I would look at a new water pump. the impellers are stamped steel and erode.

You could have a vacuum hose disconnected or a hole in a vacuum hose. See my "How To" on finding a vacuum leak.

High Idle 2000 Saturn S series

Definately have a sensor problem...but that may not be all. You can blame the sensor issue on the idling problem. The overheating in park is likely one of 2 things, provided you have adequate coolant. #1 a sticking thermostat or a bad coolant temp sensor not activating your fan at idle. What you should do is have your diagnostic codes read in order to take care of the sensor issue. Most national parts chains such as Auto Zone or Advance will do this at no charge in hopes of selling you a sensor. Good Luck! I hope you find this to be very helpful.

Have 95 saturn sl with code 26 and 27 quad driver

well the quad driver may not be at fualt and most likely is not.

there is a fualt line that the computer uses to monitor for fualts but the thing is one line monitors four different things and the code is to get you in the general area but not to the exact fualt. so from here you need to test for failed components. that code and the quad driver monitors the a/c , evap solniod , egr solenoid and coolant fan relay. the fan relay and egr are the most common i see all the time. and with you having an isssue with that coolant light i want to say check the fan circuit.

let me know if you have more question thank you and good luck

95 saturn sc1 all of a sudden had engine light on and the idle just went way low, also effects how tranny shifts, but will barely stay running in gear with brake on. Sometimes it starts idling fine and...

You either have a bad engine coolant temp sensor & connector.Located under upper radiator hose at cylinder head Yellow & black wire.Original sensor is ceramic & replacement will be brass from saturn. Also you may check for vacuum leaks at PCV hose & valve.Hope this helps

When idling saturn ls 4dr sedan wants to overheat

Sounds like either you are low on coolant or the cooling fan isn't working. With engine cool remove radiator cap and check coolant level, top off if necessary. If full start engine and turn on A/C full blast, full cold the cooling fan should come on almost instantly, unless there are two individual cooling fans in which case only one may turn on. If no fans turn on check all fuses whether related to fan or not. If all fuses fine try swapping relays around, they are usually all the same size/style. If fan still doen't work you have either an open positve or ground side of the circuit, Which will require wiring schematics and a multimeter. If coolant full and fan/s turn on and engine still overheats you'll need a new thermostat installed.

Idles high

Zab, First things first, check for any vacuum leaks, hoses that are disconnected, cracked or just plain worn out. Also check for vacuum leaks around the throttle body.
It really sounds like you have an EGR valve that is stuck open ever so slightly. The MAP sensor is a result of a low manifold vacuum. The IAC (idle air control) motor is trying to compesate and keep the engine running resulting in the high idle speed. I would remove the EGR valve and clean it gently with a brush and pick to remove any carbon build up.
Let me know, regards.
