if there was no collision and the air bag light is on there is a code set in the module that needs to be pulled then checked out. with the light on you have no air bag operation. the module can only be reset if the problem is corrected and the use of a scan tool is used to reset module.
i understoodd that an air bag error code must be reset by a OBDII reader, not on it's own.
so this may only be a light that is failing when it goes out (i.e. means you may strill not have air-bag operation just because the lights out.
you need to have the codes read to know if there is a general fault with the air bag system or it is a specific bag.
On my 2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette, the air bag light occasionally comes on. What I found is that under the drivers seat, there are some electrical connections. Make sure all of those are tight. Make sure you have nothing under the drivers seat pushing on the cables.
I strongly suspect you have a bad connection or corroded connection at one of your connectors.
