I have a 2004 Dodge Stratus (4cyl) that idles rough (almost stalls out), dies on start up and recently had a flashing engine light (backfire error). Any suggestions? No other issues, water pump and timing...

Could be the idle air control, once these start hanging up inside, they can cause as variety of problems with idle speed (can become wildly random) or simply a failure to idle at all.

These links should help:
Where is the idle air control valve located on 2004 Dodge Stratus

2004 stratus idle air control Bing

This could also be caused by a failing ignition pack.

How to put a water pump on a dodge stratus 2004

The water pump is timing belt driven .so wil need to remove the engine mount, the timing belt cover and the crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer). Then you will loosen the tensioner . Now u can remove the belt . Might need to remove the alternator and it's bracket so that the water pump will come out.

Price quote to install waterpump on 2004 dodge stratus 2,7

Off the top of my head, having it done by a shop should run between $150-$300 bucks.

There are some vehicles that have unusual water pump designs that can cost 500-700 bucks to do, but I don't recall the Stratus being one.

Do I need a secondary timing chain or primary for a 2004 Dodge Stratus 6-cyl 2.7?

if you have dohc the 2.7 has 3 timing chains The primary chain goes around the crank sprocket the the water pump and around two intake cam sprockets. The other two chains run around seperate intake and exhaust cam sprockets, to synchronize the intake and exhaust valve timing.

Replacing the water pump on a 2004 Dodge Stratus

If the water pump is inside the timing belt cover, you may as well replace the timing belt too since the labor is not cheap. You are looking at a few hundred bucks of labor, and add to that the parts which may cost around 150 bucks. So you are looking at around 500 bucks if you are lucky to find a shop that will do it at that price.
