I just put in a new alternator and my battery will not charge

I just put in a new alternator and i still cant drive for more than 15 minutes before i lose all power in my jeep. i have to manually select my gears. i just put in a brand new alternator last night and i still have to trickle charge my battery to start my car. could there be a short circuit some where or could i have blown a fuse?.i took a volt meter to my battery and it didn't even move the needle could it be that the battery lost so much acid that its not making a goon enough reaction? or could i have a break in one of my wires?

WHAT COULD THE PROBLEM BE?

Check all battery cable connections, including where (negative) attached to frame or engine block. Won't hurt to check wire connector to alternator as well and use voltmeter to check charging system out-put.

I have a 1995 caddy. i replaced the alternator, wires, spark plugs and gave it an oil change. I also put a brand new battery in it. i also changed the ignition cylinder. it did fine for about 30 minutes....

Even a new alternator and/or battery can be bad. You should have them load tested to verify they are working. You should also check the alt plug to make sure it is seated all the way or else it won't charge.

My alternator has been changed out twice and my battery also. we can drive shortly about 8 min if the radio and lights are off. but if on will go 100 feet if even. the shops want me to do this again but i...

Sounds like you need to go to a different mechanic!! First things first. Your Battery is probably in a very low state of charge. This is why you can only drive a few minutes before it dies. A fully charged battery will give you much more driving time than 8 minutes. Now what you need to do is have the battery brought up to full charge. Once this is done then the charging system can be checked accurately. Keep in mind if the battery is in a low state of charge the alternator can be damaged because it has to work very hard to try to charge the battery. This may explain the frequent failure. If the charging system is ok then a key off draw test should be performed. You may be draining the battery when the vehicle is off due to a draw on the battery. Lastly if the quality of the alternator that is being put in your vehicle is substandard this may be a problem as well. All aftermarket parts are not equal!! If the alternator needs to be replaced then be sure to put a quality brand in your car. Make sure the battery is fully charged before doing so as not to damage a new part. Although charging system problems are fairly easy to diagnose the mechanic doing it must be fully trained in doing so or repeat failures are guaranteed. Hope this helps

Jumped battery and car runs for a few minutes then lights just fade and car stalls, what is going on?

Could be couple of things,
A bad battery not holding a charge, should be a little over 12 volts with engine off.
A bad alternator not charging, should put out between 14 to 15 volts with engine running.
If there is an advanced auto near you, take them there, they will check them for free.

I have a dodge caravan 2002 it wont charge put on new alternator, and computer. it still wont charge. the wire on the back of the alternator is not showing any fire?

Why do you feel it isn't charging. Are you going off of a voltage ereadiing? I ask because if it is reading 12 v at the battery , Do not run it very long. The lower the voltage the higher the amps. An Alternator will ocweheat and self destruct if it is working at its high limit for 15 minutes or so. A heavy charge iis normal for 30 seconds or so to make up for the starting drain. But, should show a gradual rise within seconds. An alternator is for battery charge maintenance only and should never be used to charge a dead battery. A dead battery can an will over tax the alternator for too long. A defective battery will do the same thing and it is usually why you have to change the alternator in the first place. So, If your battery is dead or extremely lpw, it should be charged with a charger Do not put a new or rebuilt Aly. sgainst a possible bad battery. It costs nothing to have your batt load tested by a auto parts store. Good Luck=Ned-.
