1998 GMC 3500 5.7L - Running Rough (Rich on both banks)

I need idea's. I am working on a 1998 GMC 3500 5.7L that is running rich on both banks. Here's what's been done so far. Cap, rotor, plugs, and wires were replaced before I got the vehicle. I rechecked the cap and rotor to make sure that signs of ignition contact were on each terminal and also checked wire routing - both are good. Verified key on and engine running Fuel Pressure. Checked for fuel pressure drop - minimal (about 10 PSI in 25 min). Performed injector balance test - normal (all at 13psi drop). I swapped out the Coil and Ignition module with a known good one - no change. Disconnected MAF - no change. Disconnected both #1 O2 sensors - no change. So I finally removed the upper intake plenum to check the fuel pressure regulator. When 20-25 of vacuum was applied no fuel came from regulator, but I can smell fuel vapors from the vacuum hose. I know that this can cause a rich condition but I haven't had vapors cause a vehicle to run this rich (-18% on both banks). Before I tell him to spend 80 bucks on gaskets and a regulator I want to make sure I check everything.

SOURCE: I have a 1998 GMC Jimmy, 4.3Liter engine,.I am getting two codes, P0172 and P0175. I performed a leak down test and the fuel pressure holds at 60psi. The air filter is clean. I removed the plenum and

CHECK THE AIR INTAKE TUBE FOR TEARS OR LEAKS. A LARGE VACUUM LEAK WILL CAUSE THIS.

1998 ford explorer with a rich/lean code

I would check for a vacuum leak somewhere. Like the post for the pcv hoses and elbows to the intake manifold gaskets not sealing. Check with at scan tool the fuel trims to see how the engine is running. If the long term fuel trim is over 10 % then there is a vacuum leak. It is rare for a lean running bank and at the same time a rich running bank. The only thing that could be possible cause for that would be the mass air flow sensor or the hose to the throttle body is not sealing causing unwanted air to get passed the MAF. These engines have a problem when it is cold the manifold gaskets not sealing and then when the engine is warm to seal and the fuel trims be high when cold and then be normal after it warms up

It started running rough. I changed the cps and the plugs and wires and now it's showing bank 1 is to rich

It could be a fuel delivery problem. If it is fuel injected, or efi, replace the injectors. Simplest solution first. Try some injector cleaner and see if that fixes the problem.

98 GMC 3500 5.7 idles rough and has a code of p-0172. What should I look for to resolve this

I don't know how much you know about cars or the code but p0172 is a rich fuel trim code for bank 1, I would recommend a fuel injection cleaning service, if your injectors are dirty they will drip instead of mist, this can cause the rough idle and the running rich code, I would also recommend cleaning your throttle body, I had a rough idle issue on mine, and i noticed a big difference afterwards but I didnt have the code. Also check your O2 sensor for bank 1. One other thing to check would be your mass air flow sensor, take a look at it, if its dirty try cleaning it, If you use an oiled air filter like a k&n, excessive oil can cause problems with the maf, this is less likely than the first two because this would more than likely affect both banks not just bank 1. Hope this helps.

1998 gmc 454 hard starting and rough idle it turns over to long before starting and runs rough a little rich could it be timing

Sounds like you might have a bad fuel pressure regulator. You can check it by pulling the vacuum hose off it and if you see any fuel run out then the regulator is faulty.

Evap System Leaks

A rich reading,doesn't mean a rich condition,

Have to start with codes & then start testing,

98 gm blazer has black soot from muffler giving code insufficiant switching o2 sensor bank 1 and 2 any ideas ?

Your Jimmy is running rich, air fuel ratio is not correct. Start with cleaning your MAF sensor, a dirty MAF sensor will cause your engine to run rich or lean, other causes would be a faulty fuel pressure regulator. Start with the simple and to common and try cleaning your MAF sensor, you can pick up a can of MAF sensor cleaner at most auto parts store like Auto Zone or Part Source.
Also make sure your engine is running at the proper operation temperature 190", cold running engine will cause the ECM to run your engine rich. Causing the back soot and fouling up your spark plugs and intake ports with carbon.
The ECM was programed to recognize the 4.3 vortec to run at 190" and anything cooler will cause it to run rich and poor on economy.
Thank you for using fixya and good luck.

the ......fuel pressure regulator is on the fuel rail near the rear of the intake manifold it is round in shap. i would first check to see if you have a problem with your O2 sensors. also i would have the TPS sensor checked. the TPS is what controls your idle. it is located on the throttle body is black in color and has a weatherproof plug to it. please rate this.........thanks

1998 Jagual XJ8L Van Den Plas

Mine the same, done timing chains and tensioners, gas analyser shows it to be running rich on one bank only, swapped injectors with other bank and changed all 'o' rings. Isn't running rich when revs above 1500 so think it may be VVT on one cam, removed solenoids and found shuttle valve sticking in on one side, shuttle springs back out on other bank, going to replace in near future, maybe you have same problem, get exhaust gasses analysed to find if one bank running rich when idling.
