One of the door switches are stuck. most likely the drivers door, sometimes you can spray a LOT of penetrating oil on the latch and repeatedly close and open the door maybe 20 times and this will sometimes get it loose. or a Ford shop can diagnose it for you and replace the switch that is bad.

Inspect the door switches for a stuck or closed switch. I would remove & reinstall each switch until the light goes off. Replace culprit switch. retest for normal operation

There is some problem with the door switch(s) which should turn the lights off when the door is closed. Look closely at the switch and make sure that the proper contact is being made within the switch. There could be corrosion.

The switch that turns the interior lights on when you open the door also controls the door ajar sound and light on dash board now that switch
Is either in the door hing or it's a pin switch that sticks out of the pillar post that switch is going bad you have to locate it and replace it hope this helped

Where is the door switch on 2002 Mountaineer

Generally speaking they are inside or attached to the door latch.
If you check with the dealer you should be able to look for the part in the door once you know which version you need.

I got a mercury.. and the problem is the driver door some time it locks good all the way while start driving will lock, just like any other car. and some times it wont lock u can still drive but it will...

Your door ajar switches are located inside the rear faces of each door along with the latches. Just liberally spray a petroleum based lubricant into the door latch areas of each door (one at a time) and open / close the door several times. Once lubricated, your door ajar light, interior lights, and autolocks should function properly.

Good luck.

My interior dome light will not shut off. Why?

The light switch that controls it is defective or there is a short to ground in the circuit.

Make sure all door switches are functioning properly. See that each switch pushes in and out, without sticking.

I have a 2006 mountaineer with power running boards, after I changed the battery neither one of the boards work now. the interior lights and the door ajar lights work. thanks

If you have a information menu in the dash, besides all of the gas mileage and trip functions- there is another menu.
On this menu you are able to set the horn to chirp when setting the alarm, park assist for the mirrors and so forth. One of the functions should be the on/off for the running boards. We had a Lincoln Aviator without running boards, but I believe I read about it in the owners manual. The setting was probably lost when you changed the battery.

Door ajar light on and interior lights wont shut off

You more than likely have a bad door ajar switch. A technician can check this with a scan tool and tell you which switch is bad. This is a very common problem with Fords/Mercurys. GL

Door Ajar message comes up even when all of the stores are shut. Interior Lights and Lights on side view mirrors stay on. Lights can be shut off but the Door Ajdar message remains on.

I have this same problem. A mechanic friend told me that basically the grease they use to grease the door latches cause a sensor to think the door is open. He said to buy something thtat will break up this stuck grease, but also has lubricating effects. I forgot what he told me to buy though.
