My 1998 bmw 528i won't start , I got dash light , lock and unlock , radio works , fuses in glove box have power , fuses and relays in trunk have power , I just turn the key and nothing happend, no cranking. I tested the 3 wires to starter and I don't have power in 2 when I turn the key to start, I put power directly to the starter and it's working, but the engine not running. I've been trying to reach some relays behind glove box. What are those relays for ? I don't want to damage some electronic parts. Thanks
The problem in my 1998 bmw 528i, I did not start my car for 2 weeks, the battery was discharged, I put the jumper, turned the key on , car made a noise like it wanted to run but the jumper did not have enough power, I recharge the jumper and later I tried again and the car did not make any noise and happened nothing. I would recommend first starting with checking the fuse. The fuse for the wipers is located in the glove box. If the fuse checks out ok, I would recommend checking the wiper relay. You
will need to remove the passenger microfilter cover under the hood.
First remove the filter cover. Then release the tabs holding the
delivery tube to the filter housing. The housing lifts up and rotates
out out to the side. Under the housing you will find a white plastic
cover being held in place with 4 allen bolts. Using a 5mm allen remove
the bolts. Once removed, under the cover you will see several control
units and fuses and relays. Look for the BROWN relay. That relay is for
your wiper/washer system. They do fail after a while. When reassembling
the cover. make sure it is seated correctly, if not water can enter the
electronics and create problems down the road.
I know this is an old thread, but my 2006 325i Nav screen went bank also, but the radio still played. I noticed the glove box light and trunk light did not turn on also. I was told from mechanics is was probably a CID module for $2200, even though I mentioned the glove box and trunk light light were out and specifically inquired about a fuse. The mechanics never checked the fuses, because I checked my fuses in the glove box and found the fuse 61 marked with a BMW symbol that looks like light bulb was blown. The Nav screen started back up once the fuse was changed.
have your charging system checked to make sure alternator is charging to specs, also make sure no light are left on, (trunk light ,glove box mirror light.it sounds like you may have a draw somewhere, may be alternator or something is on, hope this is helpful.
A/C fuses are 9 and 20 located in the glove box. If the auxilary fan is not coming on that will affect ac as well the fuses for that are 7, 22 (in glove box) and fuse 76 which is behind glove box. Does the compressor come on at all? Does the ac switch light come on?
