89 f150 has strong fuel smell in cab when driving. it also has an erratic idle, is tough to start warm or cold, and smokes on initial start up. i have replace plugs, cap and rotor, & plug wires. was thinking it might be an O2 sensor or a fuel injector. any ideas?

I had the same problem with my 89 F150, I did all the same things you have so far. A friend told me it was my O2 sensor but that repair was beyond me so I just live with it. I belive that repair is in the Chilton manual but involves getting in around the exhaust manifold and such.

Yes it could be the rear tail pipe.like the old blazer if the back window was out the fumes would backlash into the cap.check the muffler connections from one end to the other

when did you start smelling this burn't fume smell? I know you said you replaced the pipes but if it is a fume smell then it is a exhaust problem. Does the fumes smell rich like new gas or is it like the smell that comes from the tail pipe? There could be burn't valves in there too. the smoking on start up is fuel caught in the piston which means the rings are letting the fuel in and trapping it inside the chambers when the truck is off. this is caused by a faulty carb a needle valve not closing all the way. let me know.my name is Larry my e-mail is [email protected]

Why is a very strong gas smell coming from my tailpipe?

White smoke is water vapor and in this cold climate it is normal. Strong gas smell is not normal although you may smell some while engine is warming up. Bad cat converter can produce smells, but usually more like rotten eggs. If engine is running rough and seems rich, check coolant temp sensor. Bad converter can cause stalling too. Otherwise, idle speed is controlled by idle air contol motor which can get dirty and stick. Any codes set?

Pontiac Codes P0300 and P0133 when cold won't start unless you punch the gas

White smoke in the exhaust is a sign of water in the engine. What is the level of the radiator? You may need a new head gasket or heads.

My mazda 626 has a strong potent smell coming from the exhaust

You don't mention what that smell is reminiscent of?

You don't mention the colour of the "smoke" and you didn't say whether the engine is petrol or diesel?

You don't mention whether the road behaviour/performance is normal?

White smoke is almost always steam or in the case of a diesel it could be an unburned fuel mist, grey/black is excess fuel and blue or grey/blue is burning oil.

Some steam is fairly normal until the engine and exhaust system is hot but excessive amounts could be one symptom of head gasket trouble. If the engine is drinking coolant and sending it through the exhaust as steam it will sometimes smell spicy.

Burning oil smells a bit like burned eggs in the frying pan.

If the car hasn't ultra-low sulphur oil and fuel the catalytic converter will convert sulphur traces into hydrogen sulphide - the bad egg gas...

You don't have a carburator. Remove the intake manifold and replace the fuel pressure regulator spyder assy.

Smokes at idle, not while driving.

you have hit the nail on the head ,starting a cold engine and just leaving it to idle takes a while to warm up ,but driving it straight away which is what you should do get the engine warm quicker ,also reduces your carbon footprint. When the engine is cold it burns oil till the correct clearance and tolerances are reached .

I have a 2002 rav4L. On initial startup I get cloud of unburned gas from the exhaust. Its not oil or water. A tune-up, wire & plug replacement, and all 02 & fuel air ration sensors have been...

The Rav 4s have 2 issues firstly the injectors can leak and this causes a strong fuel smell on start up,even cleaning wont fix it they need to be replaced, and secondly valve stem seals go in them meaning on cold start up it will blow smoke for a few seconds, these are the 2 most common issues as i work for Toyota and see plenty of them

Rich fuel smell in & out of car, causes my eyes to burn.

You changed everything but the temperature sending unit/sensor. That's what is your problem as far as no proper cold start. When first started and cold, the sensor tells the computer to place the engine into cold start mode, engine starts and runs because it's at a bit higher idle and getting a bit more fuel. When warmed up, the sensor, if good, will tell the computer to place the engine into normal run mode now. Have the sensor tested first. If good, the engine is not going into a higher idle and is still getting the fuel but not using it fast enough because it's flooding. Hence the fuel smell. That's the fast idle solenoid on the EFI for this and the A/C high idle when it's running.

Idle problem

Try to disconnect the Air Flow Meter. It is the first plug just before the air filter/air intake box. If this improves your situation you will need to source a new or aftermarket Air Flow Meter.
