If you look under the hood look where the belts are. A compotent that the belts drive or turn is your power steering pump, when you find it you will see a cap that you can remove and check your fluid. Also with the problem you describe check the belt and the tension of the belt. Fluid level and belt tension are the most common causes of power steering failure. The power steering cap will be marked to make it easier to find.

You have a leak somewhere. Clean all the system hoses and the pump and rams. Start car, Get someone to work thet steering and check everything for leaks. Oil seals on the pump can leak when worn.

Look at all the hose connections. The leaking one will be wet with fluid and will attract a lot of road dirt. Usually a loose clamp will cause the leak.

sounds like the power steering pump is the problem. check the drive belt for proper tension and if that looks fine - then replace the pump.
the reason it only works when you step on the gas is because the pump is moving faster then at idle. which is why I think it could just be a loose belt. but again - if the belt looks good and tight, then the pump is bad and needs replacing.

Power steering dont work to left or right

To find out witch it is,pump or rack and pinion,break loose the presure line on the power steering pump with a wench.Start the car and turn the steering wheel back and forth,you may need to loosen the nut on the power steering hose two or three turns to get the fluid to shoot out.It should come out pretty forceful.If it doesn`t,then replace the pump.If it does come out really powerful,replace the rack and pinion.
