Installation > 5.9L Diesel Engine 5.9L Diesel Engine
WARNING Do not attempt to check belt tension with a belt tension gauge on vehicles equipped with an automatic belt tensioner.

Drive belts on diesel engines are equipped with a spring loaded automatic belt tensioner. This belt tensioner will be used on all belt configurations, such as with or without air conditioning.

  1. Depending on the year of the vehicle, a 3/8 inch or 1/2 inch square hole is provided in the automatic belt tensioner. Attach a 3/8 inch or 1/2 inch drive-long handle ratchet to this hole.
  2. Rotate ratchet and tensioner assembly clockwise (as viewed from front) until tension has been relieved from belt.
  3. Remove belt from water pump pulley first.
  4. Remove belt from vehicle.

To install:

WARNING When installing the accessory drive belt, the belt must be routed correctly. If not, engine may overheat due to water pump rotating in wrong direction. The correct belt with correct length must be used. Position drive belt over all pulleys except water pump pulley.

  1. Attach a 1/2 inch ratchet to tensioner.
  2. Rotate ratchet and belt tensioner clockwise. Place belt over water pump pulley. Let tensioner rotate back into place. Remove ratchet. Be sure belt is properly seated on all pulleys.

Belt tentioner / serpintine belt

Most tensioners have a place to put, in most cases, your 1/2"
long ratchet,so you can pull against the tension & move it,
to get the play you need

Some vehicles will have some other size hole for you to
pull on it

If it is just a bolt that gets loosened, then you don't have it
completely free enough to get the belt on

You should be able to tell looking at it if it is spring loaded
If so you don't loosen any mounting bolts

Look for a square hole not too far from the pulley

2003 x type jag trying to change serpintine belt.do you loosen tensioner pulley with a tool or loosen nut at the bottom of pulley with wrench.

Dont loosen the bolt at the bottom. The tensioner is spring loaded and could fly out at you. You need to use a tool to release the tension on the belt by moving the tensioner arm. You can then remove the belt and use the same procedure to put the new one on.

How to change altenator on 2000 inteped,i have the bolts off dont know how to loose belts to remove.thanks

there is a sprung idler wheel that keeps the tension on the belt, if you look at it you will see a hexagon or square that you fit a wrench on and turn against the spring to loosen the belt (it saves a lot of time and stress if you get someone to hold the tension while you change the alternator as the serpentine belts can be trying to re-thread, note the belt run or take a photo to make is easy if you do remove it)

Where do I loosen my belt that is runs A/C on 2000 Toyota Sienna?

One of those "wheels" or TENSIONER PULLYS on your vehicle is the tensioner for the a/c compressor. You will need to look at it and see if there is an adjustment bolt behind pully. If there is, loosen center pully nut, then run adjustment bolt out to slack out the belt. Replace belt and reverse prosedure. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN BELT,as you can damage pullys and or belt. Tighten to factory specs. Rule of thumb is pulling the belt out and check for slack. No more/less than one inch slack.
