  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

Did you replace the old battery with a battery that was meant for your car? Was your trouble from the battery, your alternator or both?

The alternator should be tested for its operational value in this case. There may be some issues with the charge rate.

Testing the amperage output of the alternator is good for measuring the amount (not the level) of voltage the alternator can produce. This test can be tricky because if the alternator is weak it can still show it as producing amperage. Which is good, but if the voltage is low, it will still allow the battery to go dead. To check the amperage output of an alternator an amp meter is needed. Once the meter is connected start the engine. Next turn on all electrical accessories and raise the engine idle to about 1200 RPM. The alternator should output the max amperage it was designed to produce. Example: a 90 amp alternator should output about 88 amps. Note: An alternator cannot sustain maximum output for long periods of time. If the alternator is forced to operate at maximum output it will overheat and fail. An alternator is designed to operate at max amperage output only for a reasonable amount of time.

((Connect the voltage meter lead the same way you would in a battery static voltage check, Start engine (do not drive) at engine idle the voltage should be between 13.6 to 14.3 volts. If not the alternator may need replacing.)))

2009 Kia Rio 5. The Battery light is on. Not blowing heat or A/C. It has a new alternator.

If the battery light is on, the alternator is still showing a fault or not charging the battery. No heat of A/C may be a result of low battery state. Who fitted the new alternator? They can easily be checked with a Digital Multimeter. New OEM or Refurbished, or someone said "this one might fit" :>D

I connect the battery and the fan for the rad stays on the dash like the green lights like the ones that control the ac/heat and how fast your going come on and off when the battery is connected and it...

Sounds like you may need a new battery. Weird things happen when a battery is under charged. Wipers turn on real slow, dash lights come on. Time for a new battery, possibly an alternator if it's not keeping the battery properly charged.

No heat...Needed new battery

Well #1 with the gauge going to hot and no heat,10 to 1 it's a bad thermostat, stuck in the closed position. If you drove it like that for any length of time, with it hot, other things can get damaged.Change the thermostat, then have the alternator checked to see if it's charging. The meter should read 13 to 14 volts or more.

Heated seats in my 2004 navigator are not working

if the light doesnt come on for the heated seat, *sometimes* the electronics need to be reset. You do this by very carefully taking both battery poles off the battery entirely. Then touching the negative to the positive WHILE NEITHER IS TOUCHING THE BATTERY (this is very important otherwise you could get shocked). This will clear computer and reset it. Then reconnect the positive first. then the negative. this will sometimes work. This is only if the light for the heated seats is not coming on. If the light is coming on you probably need a new heater core.
