My 1991 Toyota Previa has been sitting and now won't start.

My 1991 Toyota Previa has been sitting in my driveway for several months. I just charged up the battery and tried to start it, but it won't fire up. It is turning over, when I spray starter fluid in the air intake it sputters but doesn't start. i loosened the hollow bolt attached to a fuel line attached to the engine under the driver's seat and gas was coming out for a while, then stopped. How do you check and see if the fuel pump is working, and also, is this a fuel filter problem if it is not the pump? Could it be something worse?

You need to check a couple of things. If your car has been sitting, then it could be any of a number of problems. Check to make sure that you have the three things your car needs to run. 1. Air- is the air filter clean with no blockages like mouse nests on the intake side and also in the exhaust pipe!! 2. Fuel- Do you hear the fuel pump kick on for 2 seconds when you first turn the ignition to the run positon? If not, your fuel pump could be suspect. 3. Spark- If you have air and fuel, but no spark, then your ignition system is under investigation. Be methodical you need all 3 of these things for the car to run, without any one them your stuck!
Hope this helps you out!! Try running the car on propane, if it runs beautifully, then you know it's a fuel delivery problem.

1991 Toyota Previa. I have a 91, well, that's what the production date was on sticker on the the inside of driver door.

Question edited for clarity.
Question moved to model Category.

If it cranks, it _does_ turn over. You are cranking but not firing or starting.

Does your vehicle have an anti-theft alarm and immobilizer? Is the battery light on, or is it the anti-theft light? If so, it needs to be reset when you disconnect the battery. It sounds like you have a battery issue, or a battery charging issue. Your best bet is a mobile auto-electrician with a pro grade scan tool computer to correctly diagnose.

The link is inconclusive regarding an immobilizer, but I bet it has one.

I have a Toyota Previa AWD, a couple of months ago when I would shut the van off it would not start again at all. I would leave it sit for a couple of hours and it would fire right up. The problem is...

I would first try putting a small amount of starter fluid in the air cleaner when it refuses to start. If it starts then, it is likely low fuel pump pressure which can be caused by a clogged fuel filter, bad fuel pump, or a poor wiring connection to the pump.

My celica has been sitting in the driveway for about 6 months. I connected the battery and had little trouble starting it, but finally got it to start. Then i turned it off and tried to turn it on again...

The battery connections may be dirty. The alternator may not be charging the battery. You had enough battery to start the car and keep it running but because the battery may not have been receiving charge, it lost power the whole time the engine was running. When you turned off the engine, the battery may have been practically dead. So, it wouldn't have any power left when you tried to restart or even turn on.

If you have a battery charger, charge the battery back up. Check the alternator for proper charging output. some auto parts stores will check the alternator output for free.

1993 toyota previa. car starts when cold, but if i drive car 4 a while and turn it off it wont start until i let it sit 4 a couple of hours.

Corroded positive battery terminal. Clean both the terminal and the battery post and tighten clamp bolt. Don't just tighten bolts. There's a layer of corrosion that conducts when cold/damp and gets warm during starting and charging, dries out, and then won't conduct.

1991 Toyota Previa won't start

low voltage to starter. Check battery for proper charge (must be 12.5+ volts), clean and tighten battery terminals. If below 12.5 volts, charging or battery replacement is needed. Hopefully this helpd
