My 1991 Toyota Previa has been sitting in my driveway for several months. I just charged up the battery and tried to start it, but it won't fire up. It is turning over, when I spray starter fluid in the air intake it sputters but doesn't start. i loosened the hollow bolt attached to a fuel line attached to the engine under the driver's seat and gas was coming out for a while, then stopped. How do you check and see if the fuel pump is working, and also, is this a fuel filter problem if it is not the pump? Could it be something worse?
You need to check a couple of things. If your car has been sitting, then it could be any of a number of problems. Check to make sure that you have the three things your car needs to run. 1. Air- is the air filter clean with no blockages like mouse nests on the intake side and also in the exhaust pipe!! 2. Fuel- Do you hear the fuel pump kick on for 2 seconds when you first turn the ignition to the run positon? If not, your fuel pump could be suspect. 3. Spark- If you have air and fuel, but no spark, then your ignition system is under investigation. Be methodical you need all 3 of these things for the car to run, without any one them your stuck!
Hope this helps you out!! Try running the car on propane, if it runs beautifully, then you know it's a fuel delivery problem.
