Bad ignition switch,
Bad neutral safety switch
Bad starter relay.
Bad starter.
If you understand how relays work, you can remove the relay in the car and jump the switch pins together. If the starter motor turns the engine, you problem is the first 3. If not, its the starter itself.
Three items to check there. Make sure the battery terminals are clean and secure, check the starter relay (quick way is to steal another in the power center and switch them). Also check the engine grounds and that the starter solenoid is engaging. If you have power at the small terminal on the starter when the key is turned to start, good bet the starter is bad.
The starter solenoid is attached to the side of the starter...kind of piggybacked on the top or side of it...thats what the starter wires are hooked to...good luck..Lee
the cargo light right at the back hatch is a switch...I have the same jeep and could not figure out how to shut off the lights, I figured this out after a while.
The starter is a good possibility. Try tapping the starter with a small
hammer while trying to start it. Sometimes the brushes in the starter
get dirty and tapping it will jar them loose. If the jeep starts then
replace the starter. If the jeep does not start, take a test light and
see if you are getting voltage to the big nut on the starter while
trying to start it. If it's getting 12 volts and the jeep does not
start, then replace the starter.
It sure sounds like a starter solenoid issue, they act just like that, had exactly the same concern on my car, no crank just clicks under hood, new starter solenoid contacts cured the problem. I don't know if your solenoid is rebuild-able or not, I think it is a Japanese starter so most likely it is.
