You did not mention the throttle body or the idle air control valve. The computer controls idle speed by how much air is allowed to enter the intake manifold thru the throttle body. If the idle air control valve is faulty, or there is a vac leak, or the throttle body is dirty, the computer can not keep the idle speed at the factory setting.
Is it the Quad4 engine? If so, that is where your oil sending unit is located (sends the signal to the oil-pressure gauge). Same thing happened on an 1995 Z24 I had. It takes minutes to replace and is not very expensive.
CHECK THE FUEL PRESSURE A 3.1L ENGINE SHOULD BE 41 TO 47PSI. ALSO REMOVE THE VACUUM LINE FROM THE FUEL REGULATOR, START THE ENGINE AND WATCH FOR FUEL AT THE REGULATOR PORT.
DROP THE EXHAUST SYSTEM AT THE REAR OF THE ENGINE. TRY RUNNING IT DOWN THE ROAD A SHORT DISTANCE. IF EVERYTHING WORKS AS DESIGNED THE CATYLITIC CONVERTER IS PLUGGED.
There will be marks on the cam gear and the crank gear. Some are dots, some are diamond shaped. You just line the two up so the top mark is directly over mark on the crank. You may have to turn the crank by hand which is easier with all the plugs out, to line it up. You will want to drain oil, change filter, and put in new oil to get rid of contaminated oil in oilpan.
If you fail, you are not talking about a lot of money to try to fix the top of the engine compared to engine replacement. For the most part, you could still tow it.
You could ask how much it would cost just to replace the gasket and let someone else bust their knuckles.
Which engine 2.4 Twin Cam or 3.4 V6? The 4 cylinder engine is based on the old Quad4 and I would guess it's either running lean (weak fuel pump) or it's misfiring and you need to replace the spark plugs. Use only AC Delco platinum plugs or it will misfire ( other brands of platinum plugs can cause misfire, especially Bosch). If you have a 3.1 or 3.4 ltr V6 check for leaking intake manifold gaskets.
it might be the fuel pressure regulator, i have a similar problem with my 95 302. but mine just dies but starts right back up. i was told fuel may be evaporating out of the fuel lines, when it doesnt start the first try i pump the gas pedal 2-3 times and it starts right up.
