I just got a new starter solenoid, I hooked it up exactly the same as the old one. The car started fine until the old one quit working. I just can't figure it out. I can't tell if a wire is hot cause if I connect the batter it starts to crank!! The car is a 1984 Mustang cobra 5.0 4 barrel carb.
Maybe the solenoid is defective?.....or.....
There are 2 types of fender mounted solenoids and they look identical.
One......you apply power to one of the small terminals to actuate it.....the other small terminal is a power while cranking for the ignition on older models.(do you have these connections correct)?
The other model....and it looks the same......YOU GROUND THE SAME SMALL TERMINAL to actuate it.
Try to check connection to the starter itself i had the same problem for awhile and just messed with the ground. or the ignition control module and wires coming to and out of it. my mustang caught on fire and i had to rewired it all and had the problem and had to fix it

I think I am sure I have them right. this solenoid has two terminals that negative cable hooks up and one with positive hook up. two leads hook up with the positive and negative is alone. the ignition switch wire is hooked up alone and on the s terminal. there is a I terminal but nothing hooks up to it, and the two big terminals are identicl for neg and postive.
