The RDM or Rear Differential Module on these GM vehicles (Vue, Torrent, Equinox) is a known weak point. It is most likely shot as the trans outputs power to the front and rear equally; gearotor pump(s) in the RDM then assign traction to each rear wheel if the wheel is turning slower than the input. So if it is still turning it must not be transmitting that torque to either "braked" rear wheel... There was a recall for the RDM in which GM quietly increased the slippage at which it engauged the rear wheels due to high failure rates...

If your drive shaft is turning, and neither of your rear axles are turning, the differential between these is probably the issue. It has gears in it, and maybe broken or teeth ground off.

Can you drive a 2004 Saturn Vue (V6 Honda engine and transmission (AWD/All Wheel Drive)) without a rear drive shaft without causing damage?

The Saturn Vue came in the FWD and AWD models. As built, for the AWD to work you need the driveshaft. If you remove the rear drive shaft and fix it so there would be no leakage, you could easily drive the Vue as a FWD vehicle.

Why does my 2004 Saturn Vue squeak constantly while I am driving straight and turning corners. I will say the squeak is a little quieter when taking curves. I have brought it in twice. Once to Saturn who...

If it is not your brakes, or your rear shoes, being so they have been replaced, you may have a wheel bearing bad in the rear, or you may have a caliper that is not releasing pressure on the slides causing the brake to drag just a little. I think sense it is coming from the rear of the vehicle i am going to lean towards it being a wheel bearing. One more thing you can try, push the emergency or parking brake on half way when you hear the squeak not enough to lock up the brakes but enough so the brakes touch the drum. If the squeak stops then your parking brakes are you culprit!

2004 Saturn VUE AWD V6 has a harsh grinding sound in front wheels

Have you checked your wheel bearings? When these go out you can get a harsh grinding noise. This sounds like that is what it might be. Does it happen when you are going fast/slow turning/going straight? I know you said it's inconsistent but the more info the better. However, if I had to bet, based on what you have already said, it's your wheel bearings. Let me know if you have further questions. Thanks for using FixYa!

Whirring noise - Saturn VUE

Greg,
Sounds like wheel bearing issues. I've had my front wheel bearings replaced twice on an 02 Vue AWD V-6. The 02-07 Vues use the same wheel bearings and they are a known issue with these
cars. Another problem with these cars is the rear support bearing for the drive shaft in the AWD models. I recommend having the wheel bearings and rear carrier bearing checked out. Good luck.

Anti lock brakes

2006 Saturn VUE AWD, same issue - only it was very intermittant and happened at very slow braking (like rolling to a stop sign) when it kicked in. Turned out it too was the wheel speed sensor. Although I had to take it to the dealership 2x, the first time they checked engine codes with no avail, and a visual inspection didn't show anything either. It was only when I happened to take it there on a day that it was happening frequently. They actually had to hook up the diagnostic computer, drive around, and get readings from the speed sensor to confirm it was shot.
