What could cause my engine to consume oil between oil changes, it uses about 3 quarts between oil changes.

Difficult one this ,does it blow out blue smoke ? whats the mileage ? ,need more info to try to work it out as this can be tricky and could be ok ,now with natural oil it could be gummed up piston rings and just using a nice diesel/petrol oil designed for turbo diesel engines might help clean the ring grooves due to its detergent qualities but if this is a high mileage engine then it may be due for a rebuild ,most oil consumption is caused by worn rings/bores or valve guide seals .

Valve sticking or a Ring has gone bad are the most likely causes. Try running a quart of GUNK engine cleaner and changing the oil, make sure you follow the directions or you will seriously damage your engine, or as an alternative you can try using a quart of Transmission fluid in the oil, warm the engine up and then change the oil and filter to clean your lifters and valves and build up.

Oil consumed between oil changes (assuming 2,500 miles) should be between 0 and 1 quart, for a healthy engine.
More oil consumption is annoying, but not viewed as an issue by manufacturers, in fact most would not do anything until you exceeded a quart in 600 miles (I would be livid!!!), but that is how they think of it.

All that being so, the cost of repair far outweighs the cost of the oil, so to rebuild for oil consumption is often not cost effective. Personally, I would go mental at more that a quart between oil changes.

Hello, first if the car has over 75,000 miles you should use high mileage oil. If memory serves correct i believe they take 4.5 quarts of oil. buy 5 and add 4 then start the engine and let it run for about 30 seconds then check the dipstick and add accordingly. it is winter so you should tend to run a lighter weight oil. Again this all depends on how many miles the engine has, under 100,000 5w30 and higher than 100k use 10w30. Most vehicles when changing oil uses 5 quarts of oil. I believe that is any vehicle even trucks after you have drained the old oil out of it and is changing your oil. It should last a good 5 months but it is best to change your oil about every 3 months. that is what we do around here and we have 4 vehicles

Your plugs are fouling out probably from excessive wear on the piston rings. Replace the plugs and check them in about 3 days to a week and see how bad they look. Clean them if necessary and reinstall them. Your engine will burn oil that slips past the rings if they are worn. Usually this will happen when the engine is cold and the rings have not expanded. The expansion is normal so what I suggest is at your next oil change use 3 quarts of the regular oil that you use and 1 quart of 20w/50. The thicker oil will help seal the rings a little better. Don't use more than a quart or 2 at the most because it will make your oil pump work harder causing premature failure.

A V8 engine will start to consume more oil as they get more and more

It is not normal for a car with 29,000 miles on it to consume this amount of oil in 10,000 miles. We usually change our oil between 3 and 5 thousand miles and thus may not notice small amounts consumed but certainly not 1-2 quarts. It is more likely that you are leaking oil, but if it is burning it, that is a real problem. If the car was pre-owned do a CARFAX. If it was wrecked, find out was was done. If the odometer is correct, this car needs to be inspected by a professional. I can tell you to look for unburned oil in the tailpipe, smoking exhuast, leaks from the oil pan and drain. Change the oil and filter and closely monitor the level.

You will need to change your head gasket. You need a headgasket set. All of your seals are going bad. You have a little oil going through your exhaust manifold, and the heat is cooking the oil. If you dont change these seals soon, you might have to buy a new catalytic converter. If your converter cooks all of that oil, it makes your engine very noisy.
