Inside the boot toward to rack (inner tie rod) there is a washer that has to be removed. Then you'll be able to see the wrench contact area that has to be removed to release the inner tie rod from the rack. Then just put it all back together, don't forget the washer lock. Turn the steering wheel as far as it will go according to which sides you're working on at the time to get the most comfortable access.

I need to replace s rack & pinion boot/bellow on my 2005 Honda Element. It looks to be pretty simple just checking to see if I'm correct and some advice.

Is it torn or are you trying to stop a leak. If it's torn, just removed the cotter pin and castle nut from the outer tie rod end. Pop the tie rod out of the steering knuckle using a puller, not a pickle fork (pickle fork damages the rubber boot). Unscrew the tie rod end while counting the number of turns. Then remove the jam nut from the tie rod. Once removed, you can undo the bellows clamps and slide the old bellows off and then slide on the new one. Reinstall the jam nut and tie rod end with the same number of turns. Tighten the jam nut. Reinsert the tie rod into the knuckle. Tighten the castle nut and install the cotter pin. If the boot has fluid in it, the rack and the seals are worn. Replace the entire rack with a rebuilt unit. A new bellows will not solve the leaking problem.

He was referring to the steering Rack and Pinion unit. It has rubber bellows shaped boots on each end of the rack to protect against water and dirt from entering the seals

What are bellows boots on a honda

the bellows are the the plastic tubes that protect the inner tie rod end/rack from dirt and water. If there is fluid coming out of the bellows than the rack is leaking. The normal repair is to replace the rack with either a remanufactured or new rack and pinion.

How do i change inner tie rod , do i need a special tool.

i think steering gear has to be removed to get rubber bellows off to access tie rod.

486d579.gif Section 11-02: Steering System, Power 1997 Continental Workshop Manual
DISASSEMBLY AND ASSEMBLY Tie Rod and Bellows SPECIAL SERVICE TOOL(S) REQUIRED Description Tool Number Bench Mounted Holding Fixture T57L-500-B
Disassembly
  1. NOTE: Drill out mounting holes in holding fixture with a 9/16 inch drill to allow the power rack and pinion steering gear assembly mounting bolts to fit.

Mount power rack and pinion steering gear assembly in Bench Mounted Holding Fixture T57L-500-B.
  1. Remove tie rod ends (3A130).
  1. sve~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Use care not to damage bellows. If bellows are damaged, this will allow contamination into the steering gear and cause leakage.
Remove four clamps retaining bellows to steering gear housing (3548) and front wheel spindle tie rods (3280). Discard clamps if damaged or excessively corroded.
  1. NOTE: Steering gear does not use rivets or roll pins between the inner front wheel spindle tie rod and rack.

Remove bellows along with power steering gear rack tube (3K762).
  1. Position power rack and pinion steering gear so that several steering gear teeth are exposed. Hold steering gear sector shaft (3575) with an adjustable wrench on end teeth only while loosening ball joint nuts.
Assembly
  1. Expose several steering gear teeth and hold steering gear with adjustable wrench.
  1. Tighten each front wheel spindle tie rod separately to 90-110 Nm (67-81 lb-ft).
  1. Thoroughly clean steering gear and steering gear housing bore of any foreign material. Any abrasive material is extremely harmful to high-pressure oil seals.
  1. Apply Steering Gear Grease C3AZ-19578-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESW-M1C87-A to groove in front wheel spindle tie rod where tie rod bellows clamp to front wheel spindle tie rod and uniformly to inner diameter of tie rod bellows before installation. This allows for toe-in adjustment without twisting tie rod bellows.
  1. Install tie rod bellows and power steering gear rack tube. Make sure power steering gear rack tube is positioned as shown.

What do bellow boots do?

all they do is keep dirt and water from getting into the steering unit, they are seals, if your steering is acting up it is to late, the damage has been done by the torn boot.

Power stearing luquid leak (Honda Accord 2002 50K milage)

aside from any obvious leaks from the hoses or fittings, or the pump. typically if you were to pull the rubber dust boots of the ends of the rack, any fluid inside the boot would indicate a bad rack. hope this helps.
