Tranmission cooler line attached to radiator stuck

On older jeeps, the upper radiator support is held by torx screws, T30, if I recall, but maybe T27.
Drain radiator, remove upper and lower hoses, disconnect transmission cooler lines, remove upper radiator support panel, and hood latch if necessary. Check for obstructions-radiator should be free to lift out. Funny that the radiator support and hood latch were both held by torx screws, but were different sizes.

YOU WILL HAVE TO REMOVE THE FRONT GRILLE AND BUMPER FASCIA TO GET TO THE COOLER LINES ON THE RADIATOR.

As far as I know, that clip is not replaceable... (called a quick disconnect).
The entire tube assembly may be, and likely can be done by any decent radiator shop. Assuming the end part that broke is the radiator end. Otherwise, you will need to get a replacement line either from a dealer or from a scrapyard. There may be several "jury rig" options you could use to make a repair, but I don't recommend doing that there because of the location.(tight and difficult to reach) Jury rig is fine for stuck in the woods situations...do it right if you're home.

Things You'll Need:

• Resealable container
• Wrench
• Replacement hoses, if necessary
• Replacement radiator
• Engine coolant
• Distilled water
  

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable before you begin the process of replacing the radiator. Then, remove the plug on the underside of the radiator and let the engine coolant drain into a resealable container.
   
2. Remove the upper radiator hose and lower radiator hose. Inspect the hoses, and if they need to be replace, this is the perfect time to do it. Unfasten all of the bolts with a wrench, securing the grill reinforcement panel, and take off the panel.
   
3. Unhook the transmission cooler lines, along with any electrical connections. Take off the radiator mounting support bolts, and remove the radiator support. Remove the bolts holding the radiator in place, and lift out the radiator.
   
4. Slide the new radiator into place, and tighten the bolts according to specifications. Reattach the radiator support and the radiator mounting support bolts.
   
5. Reconnect the electrical connections and the transmission cooler lines, and replace the grille reinforcement panel. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
   
6. Fill the radiator with a mixture of half engine coolant and half distilled water, pouring slowly to avoid excess air.
   
7. Start the engine and let it run for several minutes with the cap on very loosely to bleed air from the system, then top off the engine coolant mixture, if necessary. Replace the radiator cap securely.

• Don't waste good engine coolant. If the coolant is clean, it can safely be reused. If you're unable to reuse it, take it to a garage or a hazardous waste facility for proper disposal.
• Be sure the engine of your Jeep Grand Cherokee is completely cool before replacing the radiator because the hot liquid and steam can cause serious burns. Put a thick towel over the radiator cap and open the cap very slowly to allow any steam to escape. It's also a good idea to wear gloves and protective clothing.
• Remember that cats and dogs are attracted to antifreeze, which can be fatal if ingested. Clean up any spills as soon as they happen.

I'm going to assume you have an automatic transmission? If so, look on the passengers side of the transmission...There should be two steel lines (like fuel lines) coming from the trans, going towards the front of the vehicle. follow either of them and it should lead you to the transmission cooler. (Ordinarily inside the drivers side tank of the radiator) It is possible that someone has disconnected it from the radiator and has used an aftermarket cooler mounted somewhere at the front (usually in front of the a/c condenser. I generally use these as an "add on" to the original system, not as a "stand alone) unless the unit is exceptionally large.

You don't get there that way. remove the six or so bolts that attach the rail above the radiator to the front trim, and, remove the bolts that hold the same rail to the radiator and rail extensions from the front fenders (including latch loop) also remove the electric fan. once you get the top rail off remove the air box, lower hose and trans cooler lines. Radiator lifts straight up.

What exactly is it doing? 1995 Grand cherokee doesn't have a limp mode for the transmission.

The cooling system is pretty much self explanatory hoses go from and to the most obvious places...(you wouldn't try to stretch the lower hose all the way across to the upper hose connection). The trans cooler in the radiator can actually be connected either way. It is non-directional, being a simple coil inside the radiator tank. If you want to install an external trans cooler, that's a bit different...it needs to go on the outflow side of the radiator so it can further cool what the radiator has already cooled down. An easy way to find out which side is the return line, simply take one fitting off the radiator, remove the coil wire so engine dosen't start and "bump" the engine over till trans fluid comes out. if out of radiator nipple you are on the correct side, out of hose, install on other side. Leaking lines can be partially replaced using brass compression fittings made for this. Only use them on straight clean runs, not on heavy rust or bends.

You should be able to locate it by following the upper radiator hose to the engine, where the hose is clamped to a housing. Remove the clamp, remove the hose, remove 2 bolts attaching the housing to engine, inside is the thermostat. Clean off gasket from surfaces, replace- make sure the thermostat is facing the correct direction, or car will overheat. If u can't locate it w/ these directions, let me know. Good Luck!
