Engine rattle The vehicle seems to run fine until you turn on the AC and put the vehicle in gear, then it has a rattle in the engine compartment. The noise goes away when you raise the RPMs. Mechanic has changed the belt tensioner and compressor, but the problem still exists. Any ideas??

Does it only do it with the a/c on or does it do it with it off and in gear. If it does it with the air off and in gear the the problem is possibly in the tranny. If it only does it with the air on the possibly another pully in a bind causing the rattle possibly water pump.

It sounds like your AC compressor is going bad. Most vehicles also turn on the AC when in defrost mode, since the AC also acts as a dehumidifier.

If the compressor is failing, or there is a restriction in the ac system, the compressor could put a heavy load on the belt and the engine.
Normally the ac clutch would slip and not kill the engine, but anything is possible.
I t could be something else electrical too.
