I have a 99 Buick regal that stalls while driving or just sitting still replaced mass air flow sensor an that didn't fix it and no garage can figure out why its doing it can you please help. to describe it better the rpm's stay at about 500 while sitting still an just before it stalls it goes up to 2,000 an the car shuts off, when driving rpm's normally level out at 1500 an instead of going up before stalling out it shoots down to 500 an shuts off. i've never had this issue with any car i have fixed so i cant even pin point the problem so if you know a solution please let me know, i've been told it could be the ignition if thats true then tell me so. Thank you

Replace the fuel filter. If that doesnt do it which it probably will, make sure the fuel pressure is consistent, as it could be a faulty fuel pressure sensor.

SOURCE: 000 NISSAN Xterra -- after warming up, loses RPM by 500-1000..... have replaced ignition wires and distributor, checked mass air flow sensor and OK.....

I had a problem on my Nissan Xterra 2000. Symptons sound similar. In my case, it ran fine for a while and then suddenly the engine starts to stumble and lose output. At one point it did not even have enough HP to move. Irregular idling too. Thought it was water in my fuel. Bought water remover from the store and added to gas tank. Problem did not go away. Instead, "Service Engine Soon" light came on. Had to have it towed to the dealer as there was no way the engine could keep up with traffic. Dealer replaced the "Crank Position Sensor" today. Parts $33.00, Labor: $300 (about 3 hrs worth of work). Seems to work fine now but I will wait and see. Dealer also stated that Distributor bearing appears to be noisy and will need to be replaced sooner or later. I will wait for it to go before I fix that.

Have a performance diagnostic performed. And run the LOWEST octane that your car allows. Too high octane lowers performance with the slower burn, essentially less voliatile burn.
Check tire pressures and driving habits.

I have a 99 Buick Regal, it hesitates and even stalls out. I had the oil and filters changed as well as the fuel filter. It is still hesitant and feels like it wants to dye. When I changed the fuel filter...

A combination of problems could be causing your hesitation/stall issue:
  1. Bad MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor
  2. Bad TPS (Throttle Position Sensor)
Getting a free diagnostic test to pull codes will make narrowing down your problem a bit easier. Most chain auto parts stores will do a complimentary diagnostic test. The most common cause with a car that stalls when warm is the TPS. It controls your idling speed under all conditions. Even replacing the MAF alone doesn't always fix the problem although it may show up as being problematic. The 2 parts basically go hand in hand with your particular problem.

Where is mass air flow senser on a 1989 buick regal

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. The BUICK Regal Mass Air Flow sensor is usually installed in the intake air duct between the air filter and the throttle body mounted on the intake manifold. Also check the throttle body for mass air flow sensors location.
On mass air flow sensors with a sense wire, this wire can become contaminated with dust particles. These particles can be removed with automotive solvents that are safe for the use on mass air flow sensors. Before replacing the mass air flow sensor check for air leaks in the connecting air ducts and intake manifold. These leaks can cause similar symptoms as a malfunctioning mass air flow sensor.

Bad or contaminated BUICK Regal Mass Air Flow sensor can possibly cause a wide range of various vehicle drivability problems such as stalling, especially when the engine is cold, misfiring, poor acceleration, etc. In addition, a problem with the Mass Air Flow sensor often causes the "check engine" or "service engine soon" light in the vehicle instrument panel to illuminate.

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Thanks

Had the same problem drove me nuts until I tried disconnecting Mass Air Flow Sensor, the car should drive normally but with a "Service Engine Soon Light" on. Mass air flow can run from $140 up, picked one up at recycler for $40.

Worth a try.

1999 Buck Regal Stalls While Driving

Possible solution to stalling '99 Buick. My '99 Buick Century would die for no apparant reason with no error codes. After 4 days at a Buick dealership and many frustrated mechanics, the problem was corrosion from under the battery location. The wiring harness had small amounts of corrosion internally. Check the wiring under the battery for any corrosion. This has been the problem on more than 1 vehicle that we are aware of. No service bulletin has been issued by Buick.
