2001 175K egine light on and shifts into gears very hard. Is it worth $2000

possible dirty transmission oil
could be a problem wire to the servo/solenoid

that is your ttc solenoid . it is your torque converter lock up solenoid. it is located in the transmission ,and to get the it you have re move the side pan on the transmission on the drivers side

Sorry but these vehicles are notorious for bad transmisions, unfortunately it will cost you more than the car is worth to have another transmision put in it.

Hard to say without performing a diagnosis, but I have seen the shift lock solenoids fail. Make sure the brake lights are working, the signal used for the brake lights are also used for the shift lock.
