Yes, you must remove it. The oil pan plug is a BOLT, not a large allen head type screw.

On a 2003 vw passat is synthetic oil required, or can you put in high quality petroleum oil in? Regards Paul

VW recommends synthetic oil only. There's a bulletin out warning about oil sludge if conventional oil is used. Stick with waht is recommended in your owner's manual.

if the car is diesel there is a paper type filter witch is under a black screw lid , right hand top of engine , you may have to remove top engine cover first
