VW recommends synthetic oil only. There's a bulletin out warning about oil sludge if conventional oil is used. Stick with waht is recommended in your owner's manual.
It's a difficult job requiring the engine to be hoisted above the engine bay so the sump can be removed to gain access to other parts needed to be removed before doing the pump removal.
if the car is diesel there is a paper type filter witch is under a black screw lid , right hand top of engine , you may have to remove top engine cover first
