97 linc town car/ at night the auto head lights turn on. on low beam, works fine then when using turn signal the headlights go out. hit signal arm to high beam, and the lights come on, then i put back on low beam. a few minutes later, the headlights go out. this time without using blinker. back to high beam and then it comes back on and then i put back on low again. over and over

The headlamps may be turned ON in 2 different ways. First, when the driver places the headlamp switch in the HEADLAMP position, for normal operation. Second, with the headlamp switch placed in the AUTO position, for automatic lamp control (ALC). During ALC the headlamps will be in DRL operation in daylight conditions, or headlamp operation in low light conditions.
Headlamp ON/OFF control is determined by the body control module (BCM) by a signal on the headlamp switch on input circuit when the headlamp switch is in the HEAD position. When the headlamp switch is in the AUTO position, the BCM determines headlamps ON/OFF by the voltage from the ambient light sensor.
If the headlight switch is left in the ON position, the inadvertent power control feature will turn OFF the headlights approximately 10 minutes after the ignition switch is turned to the OFF position. If the driver places the headlight switch in the ON position after the ignition switch has been turned OFF, or if the ignition switch is in the ACCY position, the headlights will remain ON until turned OFF or the battery runs dead.

Low Beams - Standard
The low beam headlamps receive voltage from the headlamp low beam relay located in the underhood fuse block. The BCM controls the relay on the headlamp low beam relay control circuit. Low beam control is determined by a signal on the headlamp dimmer switch signal circuit from the multifunction switch. When the headlamp dimmer switch signal circuit is open, the BCM grounds the headlamp low beam relay control circuit, illuminating the low beam headlamps. The right and left low beam circuits are independent are fused independently in the underhood fuse block.


Do you know how to test electrical circuit's - relay's ? How to use a digital voltmeter ?

Your running lights which come on when you are in drive should be the ones flashing when you use the key FOB to lock or unlock vehicle not your head lights. Although unusual maybe both low beam head lights are burnt out or a bad ground, that the only thing that makes sense to me.

my durango does that too, its either the multi function switch (turn signal arm) or light switch, i haven't fixed it either

Are you sure there not running in daytime running light, when you think high beams are on

Also, there is sensor on the dash, usally on the speaker grate, that senses night and day. In the daytime your headlights will automatically come on when your car is in drive, and be on the high beam bulb, but dimmer than regular. At night, or in low light conditions, your lights will automatically switch from daytime lights to regular low beams. And yes, even when your switch on the dashis turned off, your lights work automatically.

To turn of the auto setting, just push the override button for your dome light, in and out 3 times, you should hear a chime, and your lights should shut off. This setting resets everytime you shut your vehicle off. Or to turn the auto setting back on, push the over ride button 3 more times.

If there is only one headlight bulb you have to replace the whole bulb. Some cars have a separate high and low beam, some are together. Low beams usually burn out first since they get used more often and unfortunately have to be replaced even if the high beam still works. Hope that is helpful!

your headlights might need to be changed (they may have burnt out)

ok put the ground back were you cut it and remove bezel near head light switch test powers in and out with 12 volt test light on low beam and high beam you may just have a bad head light switch make sure you have headlight power coming out of the swicth for low beams.

check for bad wire or a rub...also check your connection between your plug and light

possibly head lamp switch. daytime running lights on separate circuit and use the high beams at reduced voltage. does flash to pass work? that's high beams too. do high beams work?

Is it just low beams?
do taillights work?

when you switch your signal arm push forward for hi beam pull back low beam if you have regular beam and both beams are present then most likely it is your head light hand switch!! if fuse was blown you would have no head lights at all,so i would start with the swich good place to begin!
