Smell the transmission fluid .. it it smells burned or is dark in color then they may be right about needing a new one .. if not then it could just be clogged .. that frequently happens if the fluid hasnt been changed for a long time then when it is changed (or added to) the new fluid loosens up stuff which can clog the small holes that fluid is directed thru ... if thats the case there is a cleaning method where a solvent is forced thru the transmission and converter .. that should desolve most of the gluck that could be clogging things .. that cleaning costs a little over $100 including new fluid .. it may not work but might be worth the gamble ...you have to either trust the mechanic to do the work or watch them .. there are shops that claim they did the work but dont if no one is watching .. they dont have to take the transmission pan off to do this work ... so the filter doesnt get changed if its inside .. but it does get reverse flushed with the solvent ... that might be ok if the tranny isnt really messed up .. that saves some bucks in labor and parts .. the transmission repair places tell me to expect to overhaul most transmissions between 70,000 and 150,000 miles .. more than that is luck .. transmission rebuilders other than the dealer might have a much better price and warranty .. but call BBB for each potential repair place ... many have bad reputations a few have really good marks and might be worth a few extra bucks .. ..

I have a magna 1997 when it is hot and i turn it off it will not start again a

That is a TE magna 3rd gen either a 3 .3,5 ltr motor .. . I take it it will crank over ok so either fuel or spark
Is this an Auto , triptronic or manual box ?..is it running on gas ? .These no starting problems require a scanner to sort out if intermittent or unresolved ... . for now try these basic things .
For Fuel .check if the fuel filter has been changed and the fuel pump is working when hot There is a pressure regulator on the fuel rail . injectors cleaned ? For Spark -dissy. coil ..exciter. leads .plugs any of these can fail when hot .. I am in several Magna forums so should be able to sort this

Transmission problem solutions

I bought a perfectly good car years ago that the Mechanics said the transmission was gone, it turned out that it had no transmission fluid. I bought the car and found that the problems were gone after adding fluid. Check this first.

If in fact you do need a transmission, then you can find the specs on your car located by the windshield, on the upper part of your dash. There is a metal tag with the "Vin" information on it. Your local auto parts dealer can give you the Transmission size using this code.

Transmission only shifts in 4000 rpm range- see notes.

if it has a cable attached throtle body it needs slacking off big time, if its electriacl it needs a shift solenoid first. before you do anything check the fluid is it dirty and level ok, if all yes a new box.

1990 Mitsubishi Magna Auto Gearbox disengaging

you are probably low on transmission fluid.
top it off by the dipstick while running in park. and you should be fine if it reads full, then your fluid needs to be changed or your filter is clogged. replace as necessary.if the problem continues after the fluid and filter have been changed then its time to have the transmission replaced or services.
good luck.
