remove the large lock nut then release the lower ball joint then pull the knuckle back and remove the axle and pry the inner joint from the trans may need two bar to pry evenly
CV Joints can break internally and cause the sound similar to trans problems.
You will either need a new axle/CV Joint, or to probably replace/rebuild the Transaxle completely.
You may be able to tell more from underneath with someone turning the wheel as you watch the CV Joint housing to make sure it's moving at the same time on both ends. If one end of the shaft moves, the other should move equally, not just the axle shaft, the ends that go into the trans and through the front wheels!
Easiest approach is to change entire axle. Depends on car, but generally remove wheel, remove axle nut, loosen lower ball joint and separate wheel assy from a-frame. In some cases, tie rod end must be taken loose. Wheel bearing assembly must now be pulled out swinging about the strut to allow axel spindle to come out of the bearing. Once axle is out of the bearing, place a drip pan under the trans and pull the axle out of the trans. Reverse procedure to reinstall.
on this type of vehichle, you have two axles in the front; one going to each side. Chances are that the boot at the axle joint was torn and that is why you are having problem. In teh past people used to replace the boot, this day and age its actually cheaper to replace the axle. So you would need to replace that side of the axle (the half shaft).
The axle should be able to be removed by using a flat ended pry bar tool with a dull flat end. Or possibly a very large flat screw driver. Put the pry bar between the axle and transmission. With light pressure, the axle should pop out of the transmission. The axle just snaps into the transmission. There should be no need or cause to damage the seal because the seal is inset into the transmission. Just watch what you are doing. As far as replacing the seal, I do not know. I have not had to do that yet, and I have replaced both sides with new boots more than once.
Definitely not easy.You need a way to jack the front end and support it safely.Have to use a pretty powerful 1/2" drive air gun as a couple hundred foot pounds is required to remove the axle nuts,as well as a large socket to fit the axle nut.You also have to break the ball joints loose,and have a large pry bar to remove the axles from the trans while being careful of the axle seals.
