I have a 1993 Olds 88 that is stuck in neutral. The shifter handle moves too easy, indicator needle moves but its not engaging. I was told it was shifter rod or cable. How do I Get to the shift cable at each end? Thanks in advance!!!!

I think you did as I did and broke the shifter handle... it was hard to shift for a while and then one day wouldn't go... there are 4 bolts(2-10mm 2-14mm?? I think) on the bottom of the column close to the pedals... take those out and you will see the shifter cable... you can disconnect it there and shift by pulling the cable out or pushing it in... I've been doing it for years... the other end of the cable is under the hood on the right... good luck... and the car isn't really worth replacing the column...

It sounds like it is your neutral control switch. It cost $90.99 at autozone. I just replaced mine, it is under the hood, on the drivers side. Two connector wires, and one to the starter.

If you look at it while someone goes through the gears, you should be able to see the problem. It should move as the gear box is engaging. You can look it up at autozone.com to get a look at it.

My Chrysler 300 gear shifter moves freely, but will not move out of low gear

Check the shift cable where it attaches to the transmission. While moving the shifter, watch to see if the transmission is moving. If not, then check the connection on the shifter lever.

Hey Mike, that just means the rod has come off between the shifter and the indicator needle. Gonna be hard to get ot but it can be done.

My 1997 Chevy Cavalier automatic transmission is stuck in neutral and the shifter just glides from park, won't engage in any gears.

If the shift handle moves extremely freely (more than normal), changes are that the shift cable has become disconnected from the shift lever. This would explain the indicator not moving out of neutral.
You will need to access the shift lever by removing the console cover. Once you access the shifter check the cable connection to the level. If the cable is broken, it will need replacement. If the cable clip has broken or fallen off, it will need to be reattached.

My vehicle was moving then later indicate neutral and stop I try to engage the gear but the vehicle won't move why

If the gear indicator changed to neutral without you doing anything, I would say the transmission selector switch has failed. The switch tells the computer what position the shifter is in.

1993 bronco auto, shifter handle on the column is completely lose and will not engage transmission gears

The nylon bushings and plunger in the shift tube assembly is worn and needs to be replaced... I would replace the whole assy. because it's the best way to get ALL the slack out and they aren't that expensive...The shift tube and plunger work together. After you install the parts you can adjust to where your shift indicator needle is lined up with the letters and numbers on the dash. You have to drop the steering column to get to everything, remember to disconnect the little string that runs from the back of the shifter up to the needle indicator before you lower the column down to rest on the seat...if you don't it will break! I hope this helps...good luck with the Bronco.

I have a 1994 olds 88 royale with gear shift on steering column. My car has power to instrument panel, fuel pump, injectors but will not turn over. I thought it may be inition switch which is under dash...

I would check to see if you are getting power to the small wire on the starter solenoid when you turn the key to the starting position. If so, you may have a bad starter or solenoid.

Ford NC 1993. 1 time in 5 ish I have to release

More likely to be the Neutral safety stitch out of adjustment.

Moving the E-Brake only slightly moves the Shifter handle at the same time.

Try moving to Neutral then starting the vehicle.

Hope this tip helps.

do not touch the column. the cable is attached to the bottom of the shift lever and on the trans. find out which end is bad and go from there. most likely you will need to replace the cable but ck both ends first.
