You should check it after the car is warm. Park on level ground
Pull the dipstick out and wipe it with a rag as it will have excess oil on it from the oil splashing. Stick the dipstick back in and pull it out again.
On the dipstick, there should be markings on the dipstick to signify the high and low points (high being the end closer to the handle) the oil should sit in between these two points.
Mine has 2 holes. the top one is full, the bottom one is a quart low.

Hmmm, from what you guys are saying, I do not have the correct dipstick. The dipstick in the vehicle is round with a plastic tip extending about 1.5 inches up from the end. On it there are 2 lines about 3/4 inch apart with 1.0L stamped in it. Above that there is a section of bare dipstick about 2 inches long with another plastic piece above it. I am wondering if someone put a transmission dipstick in place the engine oil dipstick. Mine is a 5 speed manual.
