Vehicle: '97 Nissan PU, 2wd/4cyl/5spd/ac Situation: alternator failure, evidenced by idiot light and subsequent bench test. Battery is 10 years old but still tests and works well and is fully charged.
Problem: new alternator(s) won't charge.
Symtoms/conditions:
1. with new alternator installed and ignition on/motor off, idiot light does not come on unless I pull the plug (which seats fully) from the alternator and ground the idiot light circuit. According to my info, this indicates a bad alternator or regulator, which is internal.
2. All circuits to alternator show 0.0-0.1 ohms, indicating to me that they are good.
3. Independant auto electric shop tested new alternator (2nd one I've tried) and says it works.
4. I've been struggling with this after work for 8 days and am approaching neuron meltdown.
Comments/suggestions, anyone?
Ok we have four connections at the alternator( black wire is ground) (white with blue positive direct from the battery)
and two wires connector in the regulator(yellow with black that goes to charge indicator the red light and goes to fuse 7 10a fuse block inside) the blue with yellow goes to fuse 65- 7.5a in the left fron engine comparment fuse box))#1 check for ground at the black wire= #2 check for positive at the white with blue wire (allwas with power) this wire is protected with 100a fuse is in the left front engine comparment fuse box,
remenber== check the 100a fuse
and the two fuses that protect the regulator.
when you turn the ignition switch to the on position power goes to the alternator by the yellow black wire and activate
the alternator to work.

How long did the 2nd alt. last before it died? The voltage regulator is, I believe, attached to the alternator. Have u had the voltage regulator checked?

If you've applied 12VDC to the solenoid and it does nothing, not even click, then the solenoid is toast!

check for an inline fuse between the alt and battery,otherwise take a jumper cable from the positive terminal on the battery to the alt. battery terminal output direct and now check for charge

as you ahve tried the obvious I would start tracing the main battery wires back from the battery, manily checking the earth connections as if any are corroded or have poor contact with the car body then they will drain the battery, especially in the cold weather.
there should be 3 main ones and around 20 smaller ones. the 3 main ones should be 1 from the gearbox to the car body. one from the main battery terminal to the car body and one in the boot or the back end of the car. check all of them. Also check the wiring harness to the starter motor and the alterantor, you may have to strip back some of the taped up area's they may be touching inside or melted together.
