It idles briefly since it gets gas from your cold start valve. This means your cold start valve is good.
It dies since after that cold start valve will close as it designed that way so fuel from injectors will take over. But apparently fuel is not coming from injectors. And injectors is controlled by injector module. Injectors are normally closed until injector module tells them to open.
Check out your fuel injectors and Injector Module.
You can buy NOID from any auto part store to test your injectors. If there is no light on then there is a problem with Injector Module. If there is light on the injectors then bad injectors.
Here how NOID looks

SOURCE: 1998 ford contourcar starts until i let key off from crank position, ldles briefly, then dies like it runs out of fuel.bled off fuel line and there is plenty of fuel and pressure,

sound like your ign switch may need adjusting or replaced/ as for you pumping the gas. that does nothing for it do to the fact that its fuel injected.

Engine cranks fine, but will only run 5-6 sec then dies. If you press the gas, it sputters and dies immediately.

Seems like a fuel delivery problem.
May be a bad fuel pump, clogged fuel filter or a fuel line problem.

What car make/model? What engine?

When it dies, try to turn ignition off immediately, wait a couple of seconds and turn the key quickly to the crank position (don't wait with the key in ignition-on position so that the fuel pump doesn't try to pump fuel into the fuel lines).
If it hesitates to start or runs significantly shorter before dying, you have pinpointed a problem with the fuel system.

Pls let me know what you find out.

My son has a 1996 chevy cavalier with a 2,2 liter engine it starts fine and runs until it gets up to operating temp and stumbles and shuts off then it won't restart until it cools off car stiil cranks over...

2 things come to my mind. first I would check the fuel pump unit. Usually a bad fuel pump would fail when it gets hot, only to resume working after cooling. To check if the fuel pump is operational when the car dies, put the key in On position right before cranking position and try to listen to the fuel pump making its operating noise or not.u need to be in a quite area to be able to hear it. U could take it to a local mechanic and ask him to check the fuel pressure from the pressure valve in the engine bay. second scenario is the CSPS. Crank shaft position sensor, located on the top side of the transmission near the flywheel housing.(front top side of the transmission) a bad Csps would fail and cause the engine to die when it gets hot even under very normal weather conditions. Check and let us know. Good luck

On frist attemp to start car, cranks then dies after few seconds ckd fuel rail , had no pressure , replaced fuel pump regulator , no help !

do you hear the fuel pump turn on when you turn the key to the run position? If not the check the fuel pump relay.

If the car will start and run for a few seconds then die, It may well be the crank position sensor.

Starts but does not stay running, dies.

Hi, The problem you are experiencing is associated with insufficient fuel supply which can be as a result of a clogged gas line, faulty fuel filter, fuel pump or spark plugs,
Here is the solution to the problem,
1.check the spark plugs to see if they are wet/soaked.
2.Turn the key in the "run" position and listen for the fuel pump. IF you don't hear it, open the door to the fuel cap and have someone else cycle the key-don't crank it. The pump should hum. IF it doesn't, proceed with the following:Access the throttle body. spray some starting fluid or other combustible liquid of a similiar nature in it breifly while someone cranks the motor. If it seems to want to turn over and run, pulse the starting fluid into the throttle bore enough to keep it running... or not.
If it runs, you are lacking fuel. If it doesn't make a difference, it may be compression.
If you heard the pump run, then still follow the procedure with the starting fluid, until you can see fuel getting into the throttle bore when cranking.

Thanks for using fixya.

A freind has a 2008 cadillac dts and yesterday after starting it it ran for about 30 seconds and died. It will not restart and when cranking over after letting the key return to the run position the...

When the key is held in the start position for .4 seconds. The pcm/ecm has a start timer, it will crank until timer is timed out even though you release the key. That is normal. I don't know how long the timer runs?

As far as vehicle starting, check the basics. If it cranks good but won't start, have a helper crank it while you check for spark at the spark plugs. If spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure. Also, check fuel injector pulse. Any applicable trouble codes? I can only help with testing.

Isuzu trooper starts briefly then dies

check your fuel delivery from the pump to the "dry" pulsing injectors leave the crank sensor alone! open the intake and, spray either (engine start) into the engine then attempt to start; it should start and, run until the either is used up then die. most likely your fuel filters are clogged
