In a 1999 Mitsubishi Mirage DE, how does one reset the service reminder light - ie turn it off?
I own the exact same model of car and most of the time when that light comes on, it is usually due to some type of scheduled maintenance I forgot.
Most commonly it is fouled spark plugs or dirty injectors. I change the plugs and wires every 25000 miles or so, and run a couple shots of fuel sytem/injector treatment through before I take it to a shop. Clears it up almost every time.
Also, you can go to Jiffy Lube or Advance Auto parts and they will do a code read on your vehicle for free so you don't have to pay the dealership $100 just to tell you why it is giving you a check engine light. Don't let them clear the code though unless you are absolutely sure that the problem is fixed or will not reoccur.
If it is something serious, the shop will need the trouble code information to diagnose and repair the vehicle. The mirage is pretty durable so as long as your vehicle is still running smoothly (barring normal wear and tear) the chances of it being something major are slim.
Another way to clear the code that I would NOT recommend is:
1) Disconnect the battery terminals from the battery and touch them together.
2) Leave them that way for about 20 minutes to drain the residual charge out of the on board diagnostic system.
This resets the code light, but it also resets all of the automatic calibration the computer does. You will find that your car will run poorly and die every time you come to a stop until the computer can readjust your idle and fuel/air mixture.
What does the light read??? I dont show a Maint required light for that model?
OK, thats not a maintenence light, that Service Engine Soon light is telling you there is a problem iwth the engine, fuel injection or emmisions system. take it to a qualified repair shop to have them check it and recommend repairs, find a shop that does a lot of import work, stay away from any chain stores. ask friends or a person that has a car like yours where they go. Good luck.

Usually answered in minutes!
The light reads, "Service Engine Soon" - It is the third light from the left in the instrument panel under the speedometer.
In this case the car has been maintained properly by qualified personnel. The question was, how do you reset the light?
