This site will tell you how to locate the spark plugs on the 01 Expedition http://www.faqfarm.com/Q/How_do_you_locate_the_spark_plugs_on_a_2001_Ford_Expedition
You won't find any wires...That vehicle is equtpped with Coil On Plug (COP) ignition. The spark plugs are located under the ignition coils. It is not recommended that you try to replace the spark plugs unless you have access to compressed air to blow dirt and debris out of the spark plug holes. I have had to replace many engine valves because of this.
The spark plugs are under 8 ignition coilpacks on top of the intake manifold. You have to lift the fuel rail on the drivers side to get the #4 plug out.
Your spark plugs can be located in 2 different locations. 1 if your engine is sitting front to back of the vehicle your plugs will be located on the drivers side and the passengers side of the vehicle. 2 if your engine is set from one wheel well to the other than your spark plugs will be located on the front of the engine ( front towards the bumper/grill.) and next to the firewall.
4.6L, 5.4L & 6.8L Engines
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Remove the coil on plugs as outlined under Ignition Coil in this section.
Remove the spark plugs.
Inspect the spark plugs
Adjust the spark plug gap as necessary. Proper gap is 0.52–0.56 in. (1.32–1.42mm).
installation.
Install the spark plugs and
tighten them to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm) for 4.6L and 5.4L SOHC engines. For
5.4L DOHC and 6.8L engines, tighten the spark plugs to 15 ft. lbs. (20
Nm).
You have what is called a 'coil-over plug' system, which means there is a seperate ignition coil for each plug. On each side you will see 4 small plastic boxes with a single bolt and some wires plugged into it. Remove the bolt, unplug the wires and pull the coil out. the plug is in the hole. Repeat for all 8.
That's because they are hidden quite well.
If you look at the engine, you'll see yellow plastic prongs (?) that look like spark plugs, but hook up to the silver tubing. That's the fuel injectors. BUT, right behind the yellow plugs, are black ones. The black one is the connector to the spark plug. The plug itself sits about 4 inches down into the block of the engine. They are a real pain, and from what I can tell, you only have decent access to the first 2-4 of them, then they get too far back and start going under the dash (you'll see what I mean when you get there).
