Had the same exact issues with my 2000 Diesel. Windshield seal was no good, water was getting to electronics. I replaced the windshield and all the problems stopped.
Same problem with my '99 Super Duty. The speedometer was also malfunctioning. Replaced the ABS sensor mounted on the rear transaxle. Costs approx. $30 and fixed the problem.
sounds like the speed sensor on the back of your tranmission housing has gone out or is starting to. i would visit ur local tranny shop n have it checked out also when the overdrive light is flashing usually means there is any issue with drive n overdrive but can also be included with just the speed sensor issue
It sound is if your ABS/Speed sensor is the culpret. Try this fairly inexpensive repair before you bring it in for a Diagnostic, which can run anywhere from $89.95 & up. Go to the local ford dealer in your area and ask them for the ABS Sensor in your rear axle differential. The base part number being 9E731. This part runs roughly for about $20.00+ and your own time to replace it.
Check you speed sensor on the transmission, Overdrive wont work without speed sensor, nor will ABS, or Speedometer.. it all boils down to a speed sensor.
abs light on as well? even tho you changed the speed sensor did you clean the contacts really well? i had the same problem i replaced the sensor and nothing.... then found out the contacts were corroded took the sensor back off and cleaned the contacts. works like a charm! try that and let us know if that helps.
