Car shuts off immediately after starting.

1990 Lexus LS400. The car will start and turn over...but dies literally a second after it starts. I have no clue what it is. I think it may be the fuel pump? Also, there is a light on in the dashboard..that I have no idea what it means. It looks like a tiny little trash can or birdcage maybe..is hard to describe. What is that?(when i bought the car..the owner's manual was missing)

I think you are on the right track with the fuel. Find your fuel to the engine and disconnect it. Put it in a container and crank the engine over. How much fuel comes out? It should be a good steady flow if not you either have an obstruction in the line or a faulty pump. Hope this helps.

    The light you see might be a check engine light. Is it red? If so you should be able to go to your local auto parts store and check out a scanner. OBD2 is what you propbably need. Tell them what make and year car you have and they should hook you up with the right tester and how to use it. If you use it and it shows some fault codes all you need to do is go on the net and look them up. It will tell you where to go from there.

My 2005 Chrysler Pacifica automatically dies as soon as I shut the car off, but will start once jumped, it has a new battery....what is the problem?
Can be loose battery connection,or weak starter motor/solenoid.Sometimes new battery even comes weak/faulty.Get the battery bench tested at local car garage.

Check the ignition switch, there is battery voltage to the fuel pump and ignition, because the engine starts with switch in the start position, now check the above with the switch in the run position, If there is no voltage replace the switch.
