Question about Volvo S70

I need help on a 1999 Volvo S70. Anyone out there?

I am penny pinching these days and need your help. When I broughtmy car (Volvo S70 1999. AWD. 125k) in for its 120k check-up theymechanic was concerned that it took a little while for the car tostart, he checked it out and said nothing was wrong but to bring it inif it took longer or got worse.

Well, now it takes longer and sometimes there's a grinding noise. So I bring it in and he said, starter and flywheel -- $2750. Ouch!

Any thoughts? I was under the impression that it's rare for aflywheel to need to be replaced and that it wouldn't make a grindingnoise, but what do I know?

All counsel is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

    Hi Matt,

$2300 does sound rather ridiculous for labor, doesn't it? You are much more knowledgeable than I am, though, what are your thoughts?

My impression is that it's really hard to get to the flywheel so could it take that much time? I live in San Francisco where an hour's labor runs about $110.

Ordinarily, the only time a flywheel has anything done to it is when installing a new clutch in a manual transmission car. At that time, the flywheel's friction area is resurfaced on a lathe. The starter gets your car's engine going by turning the flywheel's teeth around its circumference, so what he is probably referring to is not so much the flywheel itself, but that the tteth are going bad. i looked around online and found new starters for around $150 and flywheels for $250, so unless $2300 for labor sounds reasonable to you, i would try taking it somewhere else, first.

Hope this was helpful,
matt

How much does it cost to replace my volvo s70 1999 lifters?

Well my Volvo s70 radiator was leaking, especially on cold days. They replaced the entire radiator. Than bulb burned out, clock misbehaving - had alternator and battery checked - turned out OK, I was told noise was caused by valve lifters. The whole repair took $734 that I took through same day payday loans. The problem disappeared after they changed oil and used an additive. Alternator bearing is now starting to make a noise. Both shop and I finally agreed we should wait until it gets much worse before spending the big money to fix it.

1999 s70 volvo driver door won't open from outside or inside

I am working on this RIGHT NOW. Remove panel (see Utube) remove white cover (Torx 25) from interior of exterior handle. You will see that lifting the handle pushes a rod down The rod is attached to the bottom half of the mechanism via a cheapo plastic connection, that can work loose. It is like a screw shaft (top) that squeezes (sideways) into a blue plastic channel which merely pinches the "screw shaft" to hold it. The connection has come loose. Squeeze upper shaft into (lower) blue channel. Added tiny bit of epoxy to bond "screw shaft" onto blue plastic gripper. Done. Saved $500.

I have a 1999 volvo v70 awd I have no power when i drive it. The car doesnt seem go past 2000 rpms. My ets light comes on and the car wont go over 30 mph.

This was a common problem on 99's and up. It is usually a permanent fault of the throttle body. The fix can only be done at a dealer as they have to download software to the unit itself. Good luck.

My 1999 xc v70 awd volvo wagon has a rear brake getting hot

the first thing you want to check is whether or not it has a heavy drag at the wheel caused by wrong pads, sticking caliper, improperly installed parts. Lift the car and try to turn the wheel. Just because they are certified does not mean they know everything. I'm certified too, but I also have experience with euros and the quality of parts that need to be used. If inferior quality parts are used it will cause this. It can create all kinds of problems and noises. Take it back until they get it right. Ask them what brand of parts they use. Let me know and if they give you any grief, contact me and I will advise accordingly.
