Does a 1999 nissan altima gxe have a timing belt or a timing chain and if it does have a chain does it have to be replaced as often as a belt?

I think it has a chain. look where the timing chain/ belt should be. if there is a large plastic cover, it has a belt, it its a aluminum cover, it has a chain. there is no replacement interval on a chain.

OK, now I understand. The belt goes around the alternator and water pump as well Just give the make and model to any auto parts store and ask for the alternator, power steering, water pump belt and they will know which one it is. If it helps, the Gates number is: K060525
