I've owned the identical year/make/model car as yours since new. From afar, I would suggest the following: First, if you've used anything but the Toyota "Red" Coolant, you will build a nasty, blackish, jelly-like stuff that looks like something out of the X-Files. This will play havoc with your idling and your engine might shut down to avoid overheating, because since the coolant is NOT circulating properly, the ECU may shut you down to prevent engine damage. So, first check your coolant (when car is cool, natch!). Another thing it could be, and this drove me NUTS for a few months in July-August of 2001, it could be that the neck of your fuel pump is cracked and taking in air causing the engine to stall out. I found this out by trial and error after replacing every electronic part and sender in the engine compartment. You have to remove the gas tank in your car to get to the fuel pump. There's a hex-shaped valve in the gas tank that allows you to drain it prior to removing it. You'll need to consult your Shop Manual for this, or if you don't have the time or the expertise, it may involve going to an honest mechanic. Let me know if these are either of your situations and I'll keep trying.
