Is you are having a 'misfire' condition (P0300, THROUGH P0306.... this can cause the knock sensor problem. ... However, eliminate the wiring as the possible CAUSE.

Loud tapping/knocking noise from fan belt/rocker cover

Do a compression test first.find out where you stand with the engines condition. If you think its coming from the belt area directly, then remove the belt/s and manually spin and wiggle each pulley. Try to see if anyone of them have a bad bearing. Let us know.

I had always ran synthetic oil because the guy I bought my 99 from said it will burn less oil that way. One time I had an oil change done and they used regular oil by mistake and the knock was gone and it doesnt use any more oil. mine has 85k on it.
