Is you are having a 'misfire' condition (P0300, THROUGH P0306.... this can cause the knock sensor problem. ... However, eliminate the wiring as the possible CAUSE.

if its diesel 4JX1 its in top cam belt cover cant miss it, sensor is very clearly visible.
if its petrol V6 (6VD1 or 6VE1) its in left head at rear behind inlet manifold
these pictures are for petrol V6, Jackaroo(Trooper) and Holden Rodeo are the same.
not fourmuler with this trooper ...But most are found ether by harmonic balancer in back of it or on the bellhouse or older gm inside of block under coil pack maybe the part store could help?sorry don't know if i am much help on this one ..
Do a compression test first.find out where you stand with the engines condition. If you think its coming from the belt area directly, then remove the belt/s and manually spin and wiggle each pulley. Try to see if anyone of them have a bad bearing. Let us know.
Usually elecrical, switch, wire, connection, or mechanical adjustor on shifter linkage. I had the retainoing bolt break on me for no reason.... No biggie just a pain in the Donkey :-)
I had always ran synthetic oil because the guy I bought my 99 from said it will burn less oil that way. One time I had an oil change done and they used regular oil by mistake and the knock was gone and it doesnt use any more oil. mine has 85k on it.
