Servicing the differential at 18,000 miles?

I was told by the dealership that I need to service my differential and front differential since my car is shifting hard into 2nd gear. only have 18,000 miles on car and 4 wheel infrequently. is this a scam?

the 2005 avalanche shifts hard/clunks into 2 gear between 20-30mph.had diff assy replaced and all fluids topped in 2006 at 7958 miles...dealship wants to service diff front and back and service transmission $800...I think I am getting scammmed. what is up with these trucks?

i'm sorry, but that isn't something that can be determined without actually seeing how your truck shifts. Like most mechanical problems, diagnosis without a hands-on test are near impossible. Sorry, matt

Tell your shop to look up Technical Service Bulletin (TSB)
#01-07-30-030B

That Bulletin is specific to your problem.

NONE of the 4 listed conditions in the TSB have anything to do with your differential. Your mechanic is an idiot...if the problem happens on one shift but no other shifts, how could the problem even remotely possibly have to do with the differential, which has to handle power through every shift?.....Yea, thats right, it can't have anything to do with your differential.

If your problem is only a metallic clunk noise, but not a hard shift feeling, this is actually normal on gm trucks with a 4L60-e or 4L65-e transmission and is of no cause for concern.

Good luck hope this helps

I have a Chevrolet Silverado with 115,000 miles on it and I have never serviced the differentials, there is a check hole on each differentiall (the front and rear) and it is removed with a 3/8 drive ratcher. Stick your finger in the hole after removing the plug (located on the side of the differential NOT THE BOTTOM) the bottom plug is the drain. If you can feel fluid with your finger, you have enough fluid in your differential. Also, if the differentials aren't wet on the outside, they most likely aren't leaking. I would not suggest servcing the differentials.

A 60,000-mile or 72-month service adds on replacement of the limit-slip differential in four-wheel-drive models. The largest service, 90,000 miles or 108 months, adds on a timing-belt replacement. A 100,000-mile service calls for the replacement of engine coolant

I have a Nissan 2004 with problem of front axle popping out. This happened at 40K miles and again now at 70K miles. Dealership says I need a new front differential. Shouldn't this be a warranty problem?...

the dealer is correct....you need a front differential.you are correct i have seen this happen on several and think nissan should address it but to my knowledge they have not.ask your dealer to put in a goodwill request with nissan.since its aproblem that they are aware of they may authorize it.if not call 1800nissan1 and raise hell .good luck.let me know how it turns out.

I had front and rear differential service done 9 months ago and have put on 4,000 miles since. How often should this work be done?

generally you should change diff fluid about every 12 to 15 thousand miles. However, if you aren't towing or running at high speeds for extended periods, providing that there are no leaks and you use a good quality lube and don't have a positraction differential (posi units are very sensitive to lack of service and can bind up) in the rear, you can have it serviced along with the transmission anywhere between 15 and 20 thousand miles. Rule is, the harder you work it, the more frequent you service it. (Even though I have seen many diffs go 150k without any service, that's not the right way to do it)

I own a 2008 Chevrolet Suburban. Its coming up on 30,000 miles. What service should I get to maintain this vehicle properly. The dealership wants to power flush the transmission, do a rear differential...

I agree with the transmission fluid change. The differentials don't need anything unless they are leaking. You can do all this at home for less than 100 dollars including the other stuff they recommended.

Rear differential makes rumbling noise

That is not a common problem. I work at a lexus dealership and can attest to that. If you complain loud enough the dealer should "goodwill" warranty that for you especially since you've been a good customer. lexus sells a great car and will allow the dealer to warranty it for you out of warranty at their discretion. your powertrain warranty should be 7yr /70,000

2006 Honda Element EXP - 40K miles

I have a 2006 Honda Element as well, and mine started making "rubbing" noises when I made a slow hard turn left or right. It had 49K on it. Took it to a dealership and had it looked at. The technician knew what it was right off the bat. The rear differential needed to be serviced. Said the fluid had broken down and needed replacing. $79.00 to fix. CRV have the same problem. Just get it serviced and it should be ok.
