Do you have any service codes or a check engine light on? My guess is that the transmission is actually in the default 2nd gear - which seems like first gear - and if there aren't any service codes other than gear ratio error codes then the transmission will need to be removed and repaired.

ther is an electric solenoid in the shifter the fuse may have blown but if you have ever spilled anything sweet ,soda juice etc it will get sticky and gum up not letting it operate as designed check fuses first, if fuse is good then go to solenoid

sounds like the lock for it broke either from the button on the shifter or from the pedal its only plastic i would take the shifter cover off and try it then and look at all the peices too see what is not working

Try the override - remove cup holder rubber liner and stick your finger in the hole to depress the button. See owners manual.
If this doesn't work than your tiny spring has come off the broken hook on the shifter assembly. Replace it by drilling a small 1/16th hole in the pink lever and reattach a new spring. better than a new one with the cheap tiny hook that keeps breaking.

Very likely could be the TCU (transmission control unit) computer. My Chrysler van had the exact symptom. Costly repair, around $800.
