I purchased a 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis GS 4.6L with 153,000 miles on it, with the "Check Engine" light on intermittently.
Now the car has 192,000 miles, and the Light is on 100% of the time.
A hand-held scan at an auto parts store revealed that it could be many different things!
No obvious issues as the car drives fine, gets good gas mileage, and starts and idles fine.
It has been a really GOOD car, but I'm planning to sell it soon, and I would rather not have the "Check Engine" light on, and try to explain everything to a potential buyer.
I have heard that this very common problem/issue with this type of car, and that I should just ignore it.
Take it to a real shop with a real scan tool thelly tell you what it is for aruond 35 to 50 dollars just tell them you want to know not to fix......
Testimonial: "Thanx for the info! I will take the car to a real shop, and get a real solution. Rick....Corcoran, Minnesota."
Sounds like what I experienced. I was told it was the mass air flow sensor. The Haynes book I have says that the mass air flow sensor needs to be tested "ALL BY ITSELF!" Nothing shows up when it is just tested through the regular testing method. I told the Ford garage this when I took it in but they didn't listen. After 5 HOURS in the waiting room they told me they couldn't find anything wrong! I had to insist that they test the mass air flow sensor with (if I remember correctly, an ohms meter) all by itself not through the computer system. Low and behold, that's what it was!!!!!! "NO more "check engine light!" It cost me 90.00 for the part and it was a very simple home install !
