Sounds like you have a bad thermostat on your coolant loop. Cars will shut down to save the engine. If youve noticed really poor gas mileage just before this problem that is normally a good indicator since a bad stat increases the fuel-to-air ratio
Don't run engine. Loss of power can be from washed out cylinders from gas bath. Friction also increases and engine will seize.
Check fuel pressure at fuel rail for excess pressure. Dirty injectors can fail to close. They put a pressure gauge on system and then check for a bleed down.
You can borrow some tools from big autoparts chains.
Drain oil and change filter. Temperature controls on engine can fail and keep engine too rich.
Same problem (loss of power and engine slowing to a stop and or limp home mode -- in cold conditions and early in journey) has been blamed on fuel filter by dealership....
