I recently bought a BMW E36 318i, but it has an M42 engine. When the vehicle is cold it constantly switches off but once it warms up a little it runs perfectly. What could be the cause of this please?

SOURCE: 318 timing chain setting m42 engine with out bmw tools

Remove the cam cover, remove the spark plugs, turn the engine to number 1 TDC, put a pencil in spark plug hole number one and twist the crank back and forth and make doubly sure you are at TDC. Now loosen the four bolts at the front of each cam sprocket, check TDC again with the pencil and rocking the crank, now take the pencil and lay it across the flats at the back of each cam. Twist the cams very carefully so that the pencil sits flat on each cam square. Snug up the sprocket bolts and use the pencil to check TDC again! Now check the cams again. Repeat the procedure until you have the cams flat and the engine at TDC.

As for the limp mode unless you have an expensive diagnostic system this usually has to be done by BMW (anything to get ya to a dealership!!). The comms problem, is the key turned in the ignition?

SOURCE: 1984 Jaguar xj6 runs rough on cold start and fuel

Hello Drankin ;
The causes of this particular problem can be that of many . Is this car a daily driver or a garage queen ? I would attack this problem by ruling out the items with the lowest cost first . Please note that the info below are some of the steps I would take at tackling this problem .

a) Check that your oil filler cap is on tight and that the seal is good .
b) Check the electrical connections to be certain nothing is loose .or disconnected .
c)If the car has been sitting, run it for a while and try to empty the tank of that old gas . I would refiill it with new gas and fuel injector cleaner .
d) I would change the fuel fiter with a new one .You must do this with the engine depressurized and off with both filler caps open .
e) You could also check for air leaks at the intake manifold .
f) How is your exhaust ? Is it leaking ?Is it blocked at the ends ?
g) Check the the Butterflies on the Air-Flow-meter . Make sure that they open and close easily . There are spray on cleanes for this . Do not hone the openings .
h)Relace the charcoal cannister .
i) I would do a compressionon all 6 cylinders
j)Check the fuel pump for proper pressure or replace it .
k) At the emission's station check to see what is the idle mixure and you may need to have the idle mixure adjusted on the airlow meter .
L) Check/ Rule - Out the Auxillary air valve .
m) Check/ Rule - Out the Fuel Injectors .
n) Check/ Rule -Out the Coolant temperature Sensor
o) Check/ Rule - Out the Air Temperature Sensor
p) Check/ Rule - Out the Thermotime Switch

I hope that this has been helpful to you .

could be the oil pump. Had the same problem w/ E 30. Installed a pressure gauge and check performance at different speeds. Pressure was consistently low against specs. Change the pump . . problem gone.

SOURCE: 2006 Dodge Gr. Caravan. Loud humming noise upon

Misalignment of the belt, incorrect belt, worn or loose tensioner, Too tight of an adjustment (many service centers do this on purpose so when the belt breaks in it becomes properly adjusted, I do not believe in this philosophy), The belt is actually one long belt called a serpentine belt.....

Bmw m42 engine to fit a camshaft sprocket to a camshaft

The M42 and M46 engines have the twin vanos pulleys and require locking tools to lock the crank and cam shafts inot the correct position. There are no timing marks on these as they are floating pulleys- ie they have no key locating the pulley in a specific position on the cam. Unless you make accurate marks during stripping there is very little chance you will be able to get the cam timing right on this engine without the cam locking tool kit.

Car sputters when engine is cold and fine when warm

If your vehicle has a carburetor, I'd say you've got a problem with your choke, specifically your cold/curb idle dashpot. What is your fuel system, "air mixture problems" sounds like a carburetor to me.

My 2003 BMW X5 3.0i is stalling out, engine runs erratically, lots of smell and smoke from underneath the back of the vehicle. Is this a bad Transfer case?

Computer is in constant cold start mode, dumping too much fuel into the engine, because of a faulty temperature sending unit. Has nothing to do with the transfer case for AWD. Replace the temperature sending unit and all will be well. All computer can do is what it's told, and it's being told the engine is not warm yet and keeping it in cold start mode.

Standard oil was put in the car when I bought it whereas it had always had BMW approved synthetic. Will this oil switch damage the engine/other

Yes, it could damaged your engine, drain and replace filter with what kind was on before, always use synthetic oil,I take my Toyota tundra to dealer to get oil change, and they scan the whole system for free and give me a print out of the results,if something is wrong, they will tell me and how much or I can fix my self. That's the best place to get oil change, hidden benefits. They told me once my license plate bulb was burnt out, they replaced for a dollar.

Can standard oil instead of BMW approved synthetic damage engine

It's highly doubtful that non-synthetic would damage your engine.
Synthetic decreases wear and modestly increases mpg. Other than that it's not much else.

I've recently bought a Toyota Yaris T3 D4D 2005 plate. There was no manual with the car so I'm having problems finding my way around the engine! (have one on order). I have a blue temp gauge light?...

Hi Christine, the blue temp light is telling you that the motor is cold, it will go off once the engine has warmed up, nothing to worry about as it is normal, you will notice that it does not have a temperature gauge like some other cars, that is why they have the light, if the red temp light goes on switch the vehicle off immediately, this is telling you that it is overheating, they are very good cars, my father has one, enjoy :)

2002 Santa Fe 2.7 V6 (California Car) 260,000 + miles. Engine idle will increase to about 1500 RPM and drop back to normal without notice, at times difficult to start (must hold throttle about half open)...

I faulty Idle Air Control valve (IAC) can cause these specific symptoms. You could try diconnecting the IAC valve (usually near the throttle body) and regulating the idle yourself. If the fluctuations go away and you are able to hold a constant idle position with the gas pedal (if vehicle will start), the IAC is the problem.
