There is a reason he is an "ex." Letting ex use your vehicle is asking for trouble. He gets i a wreck, it's on you. He blows up your engine, it's on you. Those noisy lifters means 2 things. Lifters need adjusting and it's being run low on oil. Good luck.

SOURCE: Lifters knocking..

You might want to try an old trick that I have use twice in life but it accomplished the goal without problem.
When you are due for an oil change, preferably with the oil level somewhat low (don't overfill), add a quart of kerosene to the crankcase and let the engine idle for 20-30 minutes; do NOT drive it or race the engine since the kerosene is a lousy lubricant and you want it to function only as a solvent for the possible buildup of sticky crud that might be impeding things.
Drain the crankcase completely, allowing the thing to drip for an hour to get the majority of the oil-kerosene mix out of the engine and then fill 'er up with fresh oil.
If you decide to try this, please post back to this thread so hat others might benefit from your experience.

SOURCE: average cost to replace lifters on a 2002 jeep

depending all that is done about $300 dollars thats 12 lifters test 12 push rods replase rods $4.00 each rocker arm cover gasket oil filter and oil change afterwords. This does not include any replacement of oil pump or flushing which may be required, also would recommend a top engine clean before doing lifter replacement so when you change the oil once.

SOURCE: 2000 jeep grand cherokee has a loud knock in

If the noise still sounds like it's on top, I'd remove the valve covers and check the rocker arms to make sure they aren't broken or worn. Also crank the engine over and observe how far each travels. If any are different, a lifter or lifter and cam have gone bad.
If your oil pressure is low or the noise is deep inside the engine, likely you have a crank bearing problem. In most cases it's more economical to get a scrapyard replacement rather than do a rebuild.
Before doing anything like that, have an experienced tech listen to it. Only other thing that can make a noise like that is a broken flywheel. A good tech can tell the difference between noises and give you better advice than I can because he can hear it.

Fuel pumps can cost up to $200. And it is more than likely in the gas tank. They will have to drop the tank to fix it. I payed $140 in labor on my 91 buick.

I'm not promoting this website but it's easy to navigate and will give you an idea on price of parts.

Lifter knocking like crazy all of a sudden

I'm not positive but this may be worth a try, pull the valve cover and find the loose rocker and push rod, pull the rocker off, note how many turns it takes to remove the nut so you can reinstall with the same number of turns, then push down on the pushrod,it should give if there is air built up in the lifter, this should push all the air out and allow it to be pumped up with oil when you restart the motor.Like I said I'm not sure if this will fix the problem but may be worth a try. Please give a rating only if it helps.

1999 jeep Grand cherokee

If you have a connecting rod problem, likely it is not the rod itself that has failed, rather, the crankshaft bearing on that rod or the wristpin. Usually though when either has failed, the knocking is an all the time thing, varying with engine rpm. A good tech can usually tell the difference between the two just by listening. A beraing failure is generally also accompanied by a drop in engine oil pressure as well. not so for a wristpin. An intermittent noise (tapping) can also indicate a valve lifter problem... though a lifter can also make noise during a low oil pressure situation. Lifter noise is heard from the top of the engine, both other noises are from underneath.
I would first have a different shop give you a second opinion. If it turns out to be a rod bearing, generally this damages the crankshaft and also sends bearing material throughout the entire engine. To properly repair would require complete teardown and rebuild, or replacement of engine. This does not hold true for lifter or wristpin problems, unless severe, though either can be expensive, even if you do the job yourself..
How long is your powertrain warranty?
Definitely get a second opinion before doing anything else!
