SOURCE: Is the engine a non interference engine? Trying
Dear Unsure About Timing Belt Replacement......You are CORRECT ...this xterra motor does have whatthey call an interference engine in it.......and yes it does require exact placement and alignment of the cam to crank timing marks. Cam lock stabilizers are invovled for a pain free install of the timing belt.... If you have never done one before I would suggest that this not be your first attempt......try smaller and work up to something like this.......If you do need any more help though please get back to me....thx for your time!!!!!HOPE I COULD HELP!!!

SOURCE: Is the 04 Impala 3.8 V6 an interference engine?
this is a VERY good engine to own!!! you shouldnt have to replace te water pump unless it goes out,and the timing belt ,on ANY engine ,should be replaced at factory recommended intervals. the mileage on this car is below average. I love this engine...good power, reliable ,easy to work on,and parts are relatively inexpensive.

forget what the makers say re belt change GET IT DONE EVERY 60K (you will soon find out if its an interferance engine when it snaps) just so you know, its not the belt that causes the problem but the tensioner being too tight when fitted.....(by a trainee)
