SOURCE: Front drive, 4 Wheel drive won't engage

Check the switch on the transfercase remove the vacume lines if there is oil in them the switch has to be replaced and the lines should be cleaned out you should also check under the battery tray to make sure the boot is not ripped that controls the leaver to engage the front axel

SOURCE: GMC '91 Jimmy, Transfer case. When in two wheel

Yeah your right about waer but you might be blaming the wrong part. With the truck up on jack stands ( all wheels off the ground) have a helper drive the truck at the speeds that make the most noise you'll find it in the front axel or fround U joints or drive shaft splines ( drive shaft jumping ) You watch the parts moving and the joints or the cable that shifts the ront axel in and out not moving all the way it uses a vacume motor under the battery that has a cable going to the front axel. the clutches that are in the front axel have clips on them that hold the side gears that engage and disingage as you turn it on and off the clips break get lost fall off were out and let the side gears do as they please and they runinto each other a click and pop/ the cable and the shift fork that move them also fail but not htat much as the cable fails and the vacume leak pulls on a spring in two wheel and it may not be pulling hard enough/

My 1987 GMC s15 automatic 4x4 pickup keeps popping out of normal gear. The only gear it stays in is 4 low. Where do I start?

I'm assuming you're talking about the transfer case popping out of 2 high or even 4 high. It could be that the transfer case needs a chain or gears replaced and is slipping on the cogs/gears. In 4 low it takes less pressure/strain to move the vehicle so it doesn't slip. I would put the trans. AND transfer case in neutral, with the FRONT wheels blocked, and NOT running, jack at least one rear wheel off of the ground, and try turning the rear drive shaft back and forth to feel the free play (free play in the transfer case, not the rear end). Excessive free play should tell you that the drive chain/gears are very warn and could be slipping. That would be a start.

Can I switch out the 700 r transmition for a turbo 350

as long as u get a turbo 350 trans that is the same length from bellhousing to tailshaft u should be able to. the only thing is the 700r trans has a t.v. cable to control the shift where as the 350 has a vacuum line that goes to the modulator on the side of trans. if your not 4 wheel drive u might have issues w/ speedo being electric vs. cable

I want to swap a 700r-4 to a 4l80e.

Well, you will need the computer that controls the 4L80E because it is shifted electronically as the 700 is not - it is hydraulic. I think if you have both trucks, you swap wiring harnesses and such and it would work out.

Or you could buy a module just for working the trans but I think they are expensive.

4 wheel low works but 4 wheel high does not.

sounds like the encoder on the side of the trans on the drivers side
