Is it not shifting into third gear (meaning you're at redline and the car won't shift), or is there not enough power to get the car going fast enough to warrant going into third gear? Have you checked to see if the car is in limp mode?
The lock shift solenoid that works withe break pedal has gone bad... it's located next to or In front of the shifter.. on some vehicles. You have a key slot that you can use another key or small screw driver in it to unlock the shifter. Just replace that and it should be fine..
Google it - Check this LINK. If your horn or other steering wheel controls do not work, it's likely the clockspring - the device that transmits the inputs from the steering wheel into the wiring harness under the dash. Pray it's not, otherwise your Audi tech will be buying himself a new S4.
Good luck! If you have never rebuilt a transmission, you are going to have a tough time. First thing you need to do is get an obd scanner and see what codes are present.
This is a manual transmission? If so the clutch probably needs to be replaced. When you say "VIOLENTLY" what is going on, what is the road speed, what are the RPMs at? The more specific information the better. And this problem ONLY occurs between gear changes, right? The other times, everything is normal?
You need to give the car a scan, preferably with VCDS (or VAS at a dealer). If limp mode is activating (lit up gear selections), then it will be storing codes. The fact that it works to a degree could be good news, the gear box has likely not failed. Could be the F125 selector switch, which is a common fail at this age.
KEEP BACK FROM DEALERSHIPS!!!!! WILL RIP YOU OFF BIG TIME.....ALWAYS GET A LOCAL GARAGE TO DO THE WORK(ALWAYS ALOT CHEAPER AND BETTER) SHOULD HAVE GOT A ROUGH PRICE FROM YOUR LOCAL GARAGE FRIST........
