Do you hear clicking from the engine when trying the starter? If not sure, have someone try the starter while you listen at the engine. If it comes from the solenoid, it should be near the starter motor and have a large wire going from it to the starter motor and another large wire going to the battery positive post. If no clicks, check for a loose or blown fuse for the starter. Again, if it did click, you need a test light or a voltmeter to determine if the problem is the solenoid or it is the starter motor. You should read 12 volts DC on a meter or get light if using a test light. Check the battery side of the solenoid (light on) and try the starter. If the light stays on, the battery side cable is ok. Move to the starter terminal with the light and try the starter--if you get light, the starter motor is bad and needs replaced. If you get no light, then the solenoid is bad and needs replacement.
Test for voltage change at the small terminal on the starter solenoid when the key is turned. If no change, the ignition key switch is bad--replace it. If you see voltage change, the solenoid is bad--replace it.
One further point to check--A braided ground strap that goes from the engine to the body, check both ends for tightness and condition of the strap.
