My 99 Lexus ES300 - Engine check and Trac off lights are suddenly on. Last thing my car had was a Oil change and climbed Mount Washington mostly in 'L' gear.
I also noticed, all of sudden car is giving a **** when I am changing gear from D to R.
I cannot fix these thinks on my own, but need to know what may be causing it and what can I do to fix it or who can fix it without going to a Lexus dealership ( they are rip off).
thnx.

This has been happening to my car as well. It typically happens when your oxygen sensors start to wear out. Mine does it once in a while and I have the local auto store reset it. Go to your nearest auto store and have them tell you what code it is and ask them to reset the OBD so the light goes out. If the light comes on right away and the code has to do with your oxygen sensors, have them replaced. There are three, two are easy to replace, one takes some effort as it is in a tough to get to spot. The dealer will charge you a fortune to replace them so do it yourself or through a local mechanic. It is a very simple task other then the access.

I just changed the cabin filter of my ES300. I found the instructions on the manual, under airconditioning and audio. It's pretty easy to do. I bought the filter from Kragen's for $21.95.

A Toyota mechanic can work on most issues in your car, but a Lexus mechanic will be most up to date in all technical issues. These two lights often come on when your gas cap is loose, or fuel mixture is out of whack. Quite often related to engine sensors. They must be scoped to identify which if any is the cause. Try a fresh tank of premium gas, with injector or fuel system cleaner. Ratchet the cap on tight. If the lights are still on in two more days , get to a Toyota or Lexus specialist, dealer or otherwise.
When your engine light comes on there is a code stored and auto zone or orileys can do it free but it does not tell you spaceficaly what is wrong. say theres a code for o2 sensor bad, a vacuum leak can cause that. so you got at least 2 problems, engine and traction control. if they got a good scan tool should pull codes to tell where to start looking. Also you have an abs light, if its not on then its fine.
